So, I'm a poor College kid and I'm sick of eating Ramen... I got to thinking about MREs and looked them up on Ebay... some of the prices suck, but some can be had relatively cheap... so a few questions...

1) are the Ebay MREs legal? is there any way to legally sell an MRE?

2) Anyone know where in ND that I can pick some up, short of giving my ass to the .gov?

3) Am I crazy for wanting these?

Yes, yes
Sorry, no (ebay?)
Yes (as a poor college kid, there are better options)

Buy all the Veggie Omelettes that you can! They are the best tasting of the MRE line...

You should have seen this site in 1999.  People here were buying MRE's by the pallet for Y2K.   I bet some of the old timers here have some and they're probably still fully edible.

buy mre's they are decent and pretty cheap

they are on eba,y just try and buy from someone who is close to you
physically, as the shipping will be cheaper.   I own lots of em and eat them every so often and
buy fresher ones.

lots of mre's are given out free so they are just as illiegal as playing poker with your buddies.

some member here, in the SF forum or food and garden (one of the survival sections) bought or was going to buy some MRE's on ebay, and he asked when they stopped using a particular color this MRE was since they were using something else now.

The consensus was something like 1996.

Some of the entree's aren't too bad (Hey, I happen to like the beef stew...) Some will make you wonder WTF were they thinking? They work well for hiking food, if you can score them cheaply enough.

If I had to be a starving student again, I would learn how to really cook, earlier. I have an anti-ramen bias to this day from heavy consumption back in the day. (The kids like it though, strangely enough...)

Of all the things I ate in while in the Army, MREs were far from the worst...some of that DFAC food

ETA:  Though I always ate the veggie omeletts

I wouldn't eat MREs outside of the field unless you're eating 1 a day and are active.

Otherwise you're going to pack on pounds and be very constipated.

I despise MRE's.  To much exposure in recent history.

Also, ramen is not allowed in my house.  Have had it maybe twice.  The second time I ralphed my guts out for an hour the next morning and I cannot even stand the thought of ramen.

look around at military surplus stores...they usually have a few....but why not get Chef Boyardee, as well as chili, beef stew, tamales, and such....usually only cost about $1.00 per can at the grocery store....also, went to the 99 ct store today and there is a buttload of stuff there....under $1.00 per can.

Even if you can find MREs for $75 a case landed, why dont you use that money and do some actual food shopping at walmart and learn how to cook something?

You aren't going to be saving any money eating them...  You can buy pasta in bulk really cheap(real kind not ramen). That got me through college.

prices are't that much...  saw some going at $30 a case, if they are actually good or not idk...  but at $2.50 a meal and having something that (im assuming) will fill you up it seemed like something to look into. i can sit down and put away 3 cans of chef boyardee and still want something else later...  also, cooking for one inexpensively and nutritionally balanced isn't that easy...

Show me where you can find a case of milspec MREs for $30/case shipped. I'll buy his entire stock and setup a stand at the next gun show. After I rotate my supplies of course.

Considering the price and quality of MREs you could do much better learning how to prepare cost effective meals yourself.

Invest in a crock pot.  You'd be amazed how good cheap cuts of meat taste out of one of those.

ETA:  You also can do LOTS more with ramen then just straight soup.

Hormel Chili
Cheap Cheese
Cheap Rigatoni
Cheap Tomato Sauce
Hot Dogs

There's a full meal plan.

The rest of your money goes to beer and hard liquor anyway.

MRE's  are not the first choice for a lot of reasons . You can do better , buy food that requires a little bit of cooking and plan out a menu a few days in advance

I hope you don't mind being constipated the entire time you're eating them. They also recalled all the dairy stuff, so don't eat the milk shake powder

You can not save money living on MREs unless they're almost free.  Your prices are suspect, I don't think I've ever seen them for less than $40/case (usually $60-75+)

Learn to shop, you can do MUCH better in both value and nutrition.

Rice, instant mashed potatoes, ground beef, chicken breasts, sausage, beans, tuna...  all cheap, easy to make and filling foods.  Take a multivitamin.

Get a crock pot and make a gallon of something healthy to eat for the week.

I was reading a book the other day on "Desert Storm."  In it, the author spoke a little about MREs. He said that an MRE has about 3000 calories per meal and it was noted that field soldiers actually could come back from the field heavier than when they left.

If you can get them for $30 a case.........hell, I'd stock up.

I frequently check the pawn and surplus stores around Ft. Lewis, WA and the cheapest I've found is $50 a case.

BTW........my son loves them.

Aloha, Mark

MRE's aren't that cheap. They are also quite high in calories. Something like 1300 to 1600 a meal. I use them for camping and such but only eat 2 a day.

$2.50 a day?

We'll go with your $2.50 'quote':

If you ate one MRE a day, every day, that is $75 per month. Do you eat anything else? I developed a personal monthly food budget for exactly $200 a month. It included:

One 'buffet' per week, one 'steak and potatoes' per week, fresh salad at least once per week, and fairly easy preparation; minimal coupon clipping, milk and juices, and 3 meals per day.

Can you not afford $200 per month for food? I might be persuaded to dig up the excel file...

If you know someone in the mil, many Commissaries sell MREs.

The one near me always has some in stock, and the price is approx. $7.33 each.  I was there last evening and saw quite a few, but didn't notice the price.

For that price, I'd eat Mountain House.

When I was young and poor I lived on tuna noodle casserole

1 box of Kraft Mac n' Cheese

might cost a buck and half.

tesla, you should start a thread asking about cheap eating.

Maybe 2 yrs ago, IIRC it was Taxman had a good thread about this.

Zatarain's family size red beans and rice.  Add some chopped onion and green pepper and half a package of Hillshire smoked sausage.  Works out to about a dollar a meal.  You might try adding stuff to the Ramen to bulk it up.  Chicken breasts or hamburger patties, rice or pasta, and shredded cheese bought in bulk from Sam's or Costco can be combined in virtually endless ways.  Any fool can eat well if he or she is wealthy; it takes brains and imagination to do when you're poor.
