So I've had my Philips tube TV for who knows how long, and have wanted to upgrade for awhile now. Well, finally got an offer for a real job, and one of the first things I'm going to do is treat myself to a new tv. Not looking for anything ridiculous, but between 37 and 42" and under $700. Spent some time today driving around and checking out some tvs at the local Kmart, Walmart, and Sears and here's what I found.

Vizio 37" $597 15,000:1 60Hz 1080P LCD

RCA 40" $598 25,000:1 60Hz 1080P LCD

Panasonic 42" $599 30000:1 600Hz 720p Plasma

Proscan 40" $599 2000:1 1080p LCD

Element Electronics 40" 1080p $599 LCD

As you can see, I wasn't able to find all the stats for all the tvs as they weren't given. Doing some research now, but would appreciate any and all help. Mainly want something that will last, have decent picture quality if room isn't completely dark, decent viewing angle, and something that will be good for watching dvds and playing xbox360.

Appreciate the help guys

Update

alright, so i havn't bought the tv yet, because I saw this one

http://www.walmart.com/Sharp-46-Lcd-Hdtv/ip/11070377

For an extra 100 bucks I can get a 46" 120Hz Sharp LCD TV

Aren't Sharp TVs suppose to be pretty good and reliable?

If you can find a 720p TV in those sizes for cheaper, get it.  You get no benefit from 1080p until you to 50" and larger.

yeah, that's what I was keeping an eye out for. Was surprised to not really find much in 720 around the size I'm looking for. Seems like 1080 is starting to be the standard.

Go LCD. Plasma picks up glare really easy and I have heard that Plasma will burn out faster than LCD

I have 2 vizio's, and have had no trouble with them. Picture and sound is good on both.

My dad has a Samsung 52" LCD and loves it. It has a really nice picture.

I would make sure that you see the TV in person at the store before buying it.

Panasonic 42" $599 30000:1 600Hz 720p Plasma

I'm actually going to get this one later today.  Read over 200 positive reviews and very little negatives on it over the last couple of days.  Have compared it to other TV's at multiple stores and it has a great picture.  If you have a Best Buy around you, they are going for just under $500.

Can't go wrong with Samsung either, have a couple of them.

Well the good thing is that Sears does price matching, so I'll definitely be doing that if I go with the plasma. But as someone said earlier, do you think glare would be a problem with the Panasonic?

As far as life of the tv, I don't think we'll have to worry. Claims to last 100,000 hours.

I know glare is an issue with plasma, but some of the reviews I have read state that it really isn't with this TV.  There is suppose to be some coating on it that helps.  For us, this set will be in a semi dark to dark room.  I agree with you on the lifespan as well, the technology has come a long way.

Yeah, this tv will be in our main room. Has one window and a sliding glass door. I'd say the room is in between bright and dim throughout most of the day. May have to go back and look at the plasma again to see the glare. Didn't really have time to look at it.

Right now, I'm in between the Panasonic and the Vizio. Just with the Vizio was higher then 60Hz. Kind of afraid I may notice bluring when playing xbox.

Needs a poll.
I'm curious to see more info about the vizio.....thinking of buying one myself.
I cant shake the feeling that they are cheaper for a reason....but what I dont know, is the reason they are cheaper something I will actually notice or care about?

More vizio owner chime in please

My parents have a vizio, while I don't spend a -lot- of time looking at it I've always thought the picture quality was OK on it.

I got a 42 inch Samsung Plasma from Best Buy earlier this year for around $600 something and it is a great tv.  I also have a 61 inch Samsung DLP since 06 and its also been good to me.    Replaced the bulb last year for $90 and now its like its brand new again.

Well I went to go pick up that 42" Panasonic, but they were sold out.  The sales lady said they sold 12 of them yesterday.  Have to wait for mine to arrive on Tuesday.  Can update you then if you want.

Skip the Vizio...they won't last like a real brand will...Plasma diplays rich blacks and will last almost as long as LCD.

Have (2) Plasmas, love them. When comparing the picture quality between LCD and Plasma it was Plasma all the way. Burn in, what burn in. Both are 720P should be able to find a samsung plasma in your price range.
