I owned 2 360s in the past one got the RROD the other i sold because i stopped playing. Im looking to get it for the new COD and a few other games Should i get one off ebay with the red ring of death and fix it (about $50...if it works) or should i drop the $300 and get a new one?
From what im seeing is the RRod is an easy fix but its not always the problem. and dont give me any of this PS3 stuff |

Funny, but no help |

If you do buy a used one use this fix http://xbox-experts.com/tutorial.php?n=hybrid. Worked just fine for me. But I also installed two more fans and did some duct work to channel the air better. |

well the RROD systems goes for about $40 and parts & cleaning run about $10. your gonna try cleaning the chip with that silver stuff and removing the xclamps aren't ya? ![]() That was the idea, but i want to use an Ammo box for the shell. Take a milling machine to an ammo can. |

When they show up, make them load 1k rounds for you Lol, sounds like something i would do Reloading Duty is a fun game to play ![]() I know guys who have done something similar with their friends. Their friends want to go shooting, but don't want to pay for ammo. So he tells them that they can shoot all they want, but have to load all of their own ammo. He doesn't start them with deprimed, sized, and polished cases. They have to do all of it. They end up doing 100-200 rounds |

How easy and successful is to to fix the RROD? One site clames that with they way they do it, they fixed 10 of 10 but knowing the history of the system goes a long way. plus they may have just got lucky. I fugure if i try it and it works great save myself 200 bucks if i fail i lose 50 |

After my 360 went tits up, I found a used one at one of those buyback games places for under a hundred. It had something missing, powersupply or no controllers or some damn thing like that.
Since that's what I did that's what I'd recommend. Besides, buying a bunch of new games for a new system is frightfully expensive. Smart people frequently disregard my advice, however. |

I think 2 is a temporary over heat and 3 is overheat that has caused damage. In this case the damage is between the heat sync and the processors |

Mine's going on 2 years old––Pro system, first generation with HDMI, it runs flawlessly still to this day. |

I've had my 360 for 2 years this Thanksgiving. I do my best to make sure it's well ventilated, never set game cases or anything on it, and never let it sit on carpet while playing. Every once in a while I'll use some duster to blow out any dust that could be in there, out. Just try to keep it clean and well vented.
If my 360 went TU tonight, I'd have a new one this weekend. I'm not a big "gamer", but I enjoy playing it a few times a week. |

It sounds like a great deal to me. |

RRod is an easy fix, the problem is with ebay you try and buy one and you dont know whats been done to it in their attempts to fix it.
A true undamaged RROD fix can be done with a few small flat screw drivers, a t-10 torx bit, a t-9 torx bit, a pair of needle nose pliers and a good thermal compound... silver based... (artic silver $9)... I got one for $25 and fixed it with $3 radioshack silicone based thermal compound and it lasted a month... I cracked it back open and re did it with artic silver and it is running fine again. The one thing you need to do is before you reassemble all the case, you will turn it on and it will likely rrod again until the compound heats up and burns in. so take the fan shroud loose and let it heat up on the GPU side a bit, thats the flat heat sink, but keep the CPU heat sink a bit of airflow. Do this for about 5 minutes after the GPU heat sink is fairly hot to touch, after that power it down and turn it back on. if it goes green you are good. If the next time you fire it up after reassembly it RRODs let it sit about 10-15 mins because the fans and shroud in place will take it longer to heat up but you have to get the stuff baked onto the chip and heatsinks pretty good, so once it fires up play a game thats fairly graphic intensive to bake it in. If you ever heat it up trying to bake it in and it keeps rrod-ing let it cool about 20 mins and then try it, it may actually have gotten too hot. Its a bit tricky at first, but i can do one in about 20 mins now... Get the tool from Ebay to open the case and it is way easier than screw drivers. Use the needle nose on the x clamps, and that is easier than the normal way of prying with a screw driver. Oh and dont buy a clamp kit, use the originals. Also use goo gone or WD40 to clean the old stuff off the sinks and chips. i actually had to use a wire brush on my dremel to clean the sinks, dont use it on your chips, just wd-40 or goo gone. The only thing you should buy is thermal compound and the tool if you want to open it cleanly. |

gamestop and stores like that? Yeah but I'm being attacked by a bored elkhound aat the moment so it's hard to typCXDSa i THINK it is a local indepndent store, the chains like gAMEstop onl sell complete working sets and at a higher price with 30 day guarantees. gotta find one a place that'll sell just the box if you have a working power supply |

I got mine 2 years ago and it just RROD last week. Not returning it to MS because my BIL had his for 2 years, they "fixed" it by sending a refurbished unit to replace his, now after only 1 year, this refurbished unit RROD.
I'm gonna heat gun mine and add a 2mm aluminum plate to the southbridge chip as a kind of heatsink and clamp since I'm getting error code 0010 (overheat) with a strong possibliity the southbridge is not making good contact anymore. so far I've had to buy thermal paste, 4-40 screw & some nylon washers. $14. I already have a heatgun and the aluminum plate. I also went ahead an bought a laptop cooler ($21) to set my xbox on (horizontal) and I'm going to drill some holes in the case to allow air to flow up from the laptop cooler into the bottom of the xbox. I'm fairly positive that will fix it, but if not, I'll just get a new one - so I'm only out some time and an extra $35 trying to fix it myself |

I have had one coming up on three years. Don't play it very much. Tried to play Skate the other night and the video would just keep dropping in and out. Sound stayed on. I have mine hooked up via component to my receiver. Is this the beginning of the RROD? yes - you are doomed. I never played mine too much either, mostly 20-30 minutes at a time with a few hours thrown in for a new game. |

I've never had an issue with mine bought 2 years ago. It's those 2005-2006 boxes that are disaster cases. RROD wasn't the only issue with those ones. |

eta: also has the update heatsink on the GPU with copper tube, the CPU has a bulky aluminim heatsink. |
