I've been meaning to read the book.

It is in the ginormous set of leatherbound scifi books I bought back in the 80s/90s.

There are a couple of interesting moments. Will Patton plays an interesting character.  After that it's Water World on horseback.

If you want to see a bad Costner film just watch Water World and save an hour of your time!

Movie's better than the book.

The idea of communication being essential post-SHTF is easy to appreciate, as is the AR pr0n.

The acting and writing, less so, but it's nowhere near the worst post-SHTF movie ever.

I actually enjoyed Waterworld, by the way.  Costner didn't talk much, so he couldn't fuck it up.  Dunno why the movie cost so much, but I'm not an investor in it, so I couldn't care less about that.  Never understood the hate for that movie...

(The best such movie, of course, is Mad Max 3, with its breathtaking epilogue.)

There were some good parts (I can't remember what they were exactly).

Anyway, I enjoyed watching it, but I don't really have a desire to see it again.

Will Patton is a great actor. I'd peg him as a good Capt. Rhodes if they ever decide to properly remake Day of the Dead.

I watched it on Netflix Instant View. I planned on breaking it up since it was so long, but I ended up watching it straight through because I was enjoying it.

You're not alone.  You're never alone.

I believe it was due to them actually building that floating city thing.  I really didn't care for either movie personally, just too damn long.

I never understood the 'too long' complaint in movies.

'No lobster buffet for me.   They always put too much food out.'

'3 weeks vacation?  WTF am I going to do with all that time?'

'No hon, I don't want a blowjob tonight, you always make it last too long'.

I liked it. Kinda wondered how General Bethlehem and his army aquired the weapons they had and had ammo to feed them and artillery. But most movies leave gaps like that.
It was also disturbing that the town folk had very few weapons to speak of and were helpless victims for the most part. But that's hollywood.

I found the movie interesting in the aspect of how in situation along those lines there will be clans, there will be those who are captured and used as slaves.

You are right. The book was a short story originally that was later fleshed out. They should have let it as a story cause in that form it was very good.

Why the venom for Posty and the ear-gill man?  In Posty, was it the weird insemination agreement 'sans turkey baster', or is it that the chick had more guts and grit than the lead character.  Did it piss anyone off when they shot and ate his Thespian mule?  It seems in both films the same theme played out.  The guy is 'minding his business' and disinterested in a conflict he doesn't connect with and as soon as the woman tags along, or saves his ass, suddenly he ejects from the sidelines and rolls up his sleeves.  In truth, that's probably played out more than a jillion times since the stone ages.  And no, I'm not bashing women.  They are the "neck" as the Greek women say.

Watched it once, bought it, haven't watched it again (yeah I know I'm f'd up)

I did leave a divot in my brain, thought.

When the mayor was asked why they didn't fight back against the roving slavers he said (we've only got 26 rounds of ammo left!)

Which is one reason I try to buy as much ammo as I can.

Name one movie Costner didn't suck in.

At least Dennis Hopper was funny in Water World.  Water World is a close second to Battlefield Earth for worst movie of all time, in my book.  Runners up include Lost in Translation and Lonesome Highways.

The book is anti survivalist and pro government, so if you're into the idea that you should survive on your own after big problems come down the pike then it may not be the book for you.
