Just wonder if anyone else suffers from chronic neck pain. I have such tightness and pain in my neck all the time it's unbearable. Last year around this time one Sunday morning I had a massive muscle spasm in my neck that wouldn't let go, all day I put ice and heat on it and it wouldn't loosen up the next day I had to miss work and get my fiancée to bring me to the walk in clinic. They gave me muscle relaxers and a neck brace LOL. I took two muscle relaxers and went to bed. Over the next couple of days it got better with taking the muscle relaxers but I had to be very careful not to strain myself. So I started going to a Chiropractor who was doing press and release techniques and did some adjustment to my back and hips as well which seemed to help but I had to go like once a week which gets very expensive!

Anyway I'm only 28 and I've had neck pain for the last 9 yrs or so, used to be from working out too much, how I sit at my computer/desk all day, etc who knows. Well it's been back in full force and always feel like it could spasm up again and shit. Luckily I had a couple muscle relaxers left but I don't want to use them unless I REALLY have to. I'm debating on going to my regular Dr just to see if I can get a Rx because it seems nothing is going to ever fix the problem so I may as well medicate I guess, I can not afford the Chiropractor all the time. Oh yea and I use an inversion board sometimes for my back.

Any recommendations? What do you guys do for your pains like this? I feel like a Dr will the me to get fucked and that there's nothing they can do and if anything the would probably just give me a temp Rx which will do me no good in a few months when it acts up again. I feel like I need something to always have on hand for when it gets really bad.

Thanks for listening I just can't deal with it anymore and need some advice.

Start with your posture.
Roll up three hand towels into 4-6"dia logs. Go into the kitchen or other hard surface.
Lay one under your neck, one running down your spine between your shoulder blades and one across your lower back just above your belt line.
Try this for about 10-15 minutes 3-4 times a week.

It helps correct proper neck, shoulder and lower back posture.

My Chiro actually said I had good posture and she said my back wasn't bad at all. One thing is though I do have huge boobs LOL !!and I'm thinking it's part of the cause of my shoulder and neck pain. I have had to stop running at the gym because I think that triggers it the most. The boobs certainly don't help with the posture either.

Please don't start hijacking the thread about boobs People LOL thanks!

dump the chiro.  they don't fix the underlying issue.  you most likely need to do some strength training exercises.  muscle imbalances are usually at fault. once that is fixed, you won't have the pain

No. The idea is to correct the natural curves in a persons spine. Often times people who spend lots of time at a desk can get their backs out of whack and not know it. Always hunched over, hands always pulled forward.... etc. Your spine should make a stretched out s basically. The towels pull your shoulders back, and put hte arches back in your spine.
Anyway, this was recommended to me by a good friend that is also a doc.

Inversion tables do help but they relieve the pressure on your spine, not so much correct your posture.

I had neck isuues for a time and I realized that my pillow was too firm.  might try that....  My neck was always stiff and painful.  for a while, I tried sleeping with a towel rolled up under my neck and that felt better, but that meant I had to sleep on my back the whole night.
I took my wife;s really squishy pillow one night and it hasn't hurt since.

Have you had any X-rays of your neck done to see if there are any joint problems or arthritis?  Alot of times, underlying pain causes muscle tension, and it becomes a vicious cycle.  I get bad headaches, and the pain causes my neck and shoulders to get very tense.  I'd see your doc to make sure that from a skeletal/joint perspective you're good to go.  Other than that, I'd pursue some stretching and strength exercises as someone else mentioned to increase blood flow and maintain flexibility.  Good luck though...neck/back pain sucks.

Yea I haven't had any xrays but I do have a history of arthritus in my legs, hips, lower back area. So it may be a good idea. I just don't have any bone pain in my neck it's just all in the muscles of my shoulders right up through my neck and of course I have a lingering headache cause of it.

Been there, done that....I've been told that joint and muscle pain in the neck can be hard to distinguish.  I'd just eliminate that variable and go from there.  I'm honestly surprised that your Chiro didn't take X-rays before starting on you...most will to ensure they aren't going to cause damage to something that's already injured or on the verge.

I don't have much advise.

Boating accident=fused vertibrae
Head on collision=multiple muscle tears in neck, shoulder, back etc
Fell off my roof=turned my ankle sideways and ripped some flap I can't pronounce
Fell 10' off a ladder onto my head, neck, and back (foot got hooked in rung and carried me upside down)

I have a choice the doctor says, surgeries that may or may not fix the problems in my neck and back, or drugs.

I don't do it to be stoic but I take the pain.  It is bothersome and sometimes when I'm moaning the wife just looks at me and shakes her head but I've never met someone who has had neck or back surgery say it was worth it.  Most say after the fact they wish they hadn't done it.  And I don't want to become dependant on any drug.

Moderate excercise and posture do help.
