Should I use the rechargeable desiccant or a plug in heated humidity control rod (goldenrod). My gun safe is in my basement and getting electricity over to it is possible but a little inconvenient (have to run some extension cords). Will the rechargeable desiccant canisters protect my firearms as they claim ?? Don't want to make the wrong choice with many $'s worth of guns.

Big jug of silica gel dessicant (aka crystal kitty litter, $11 at chinamart) in the bottom of the safe, recharge the silica gel ~monthly.  I'd probably just put it in an open container (bucket) in the safe.

Make sure steel firearm parts get inspected / wiped down with corrosion preventative (clp, boeshield, etc) on a regular basis.  If you have guns that you really don't access stored in the safe, coat them with corrosion preventative and then seal up in a plastic bag with some silica.  Vapor paper can help with corrosion but doesn't play well with optics, so probably not a good choice in a safe.

GET BOTH!

Seriously, use the Goldenrod and desiccant, rechargeable in the oven kind.

Thank you for the insight. Seems both is the way to go. Have a humidity problem with some light rust on a few guns seldom used. They were cleaned, oiled and put away but have probably sat untouched for many years. I will step my game up and oil them on a regular basis plus use both forms of humidity control. Again, thanks for the input !

Been using the dessicant for years with no problems.
