Woman was my boss years ago when I was in High School. Anyway, she participated in a face book poll asking if LAW ABIDING (yes it said law abiding) citizens carrying a firearm scared you, she clicked yes...

Me: Why does it scare you?

Her: I believe that there are so many guns out there which helps criminals have an easy way to commit murders. Such as:
       http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local-beat/Guard-Shot-Killed-in-ATM-Robbery-59733857.html
(story is of a security guard shot and killed the other day)

Me:     Key word being criminals. The question at hand is law abiding citizens. Texas DPS records show that in 2006 there were 258,162    conealed handfgun license holders in Tx, of them there were only 140 convicted of some type of crime. That means in 2006 only .054% of citizens legally carrying a firearm were convicted of breaking the law. Have you ever fired a gun? If not I would gladly take you shooting.

Her: All it takes is one bad day or one argument, and a law abiding citizen goes beserko.
http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-31327570_ITM
(drunk w/ violent history takes son hostage and kills him)

Me: Person in the article you posted had a history of violent behavior, and a drinking problem. Both previously reported by the current wife, and ex-wife. So this is not a person just going berserk, he had underlying issues. I would also argue that if he "snapped" the son would've been killed instantly, not after an hours long stand off as reported in... Read More the article. I would also ask why was the current wife staying in the home, much less allowing her son to stay in the house. I would also ask where were social services and law enforcement when both women had reported his violent behavior?

Her: This is moving on from the original question.. but
I believe anyone ANYWHERE can snap & if they have the means to own a gun that they will use it eventually, otherwise why own a gun? Columbine. As far as other issues, unfortunately in today's real world, not all the govt agencies are so quick to help just everyone. People slip through the cracks ... Read Moreevery day. People with the issues you describe are not rare. The situation is not rare. I have lived in fear myself, but really, where could I go? Women with abusive spouses need the income to support her family, where could she go and who will pay for her kids clothes and food and shelter if she leaves her husband? (*this is not MY current situation) but is not a rare situation.

Me: Columbine is also a situation in which the people didn't snap. That was well-thought out premeditated murder. If it were a snapping situation they wouldn't have built bombs, made hit lists, etc. Google "5 phases of the active shooter by Lt. Dan Marcou" for more on that. What if the law abiding teachers and employees had been allowed to carry their firearms? The situation would've been a lot different. As to the opinion that at some point anyone can snap and use a gun, I'll point out again the statistics I've already posted, in this state, consecutively less that 1% of those carrying a weapon are convicted of a crime every year. And again, there are over a quarter of a million CHLs in Tx. Every person you've commented on has either been a criminal or a person with documented issues. My statistics have pointed out the majority of those who carry firearms.
You should've removed me from your friends list b4 participating in this poll LOL ;p

She hasn't responded since yesterday.

Oh, and in before SIIHPAPP.

You did good. This is a great example of anti-gunners projecting and getting overly emotional, while you stick to cold, hard facts.

She knows she lost, her irrational fears just keep her from admitting it.

Um...you're the OP...that's how it works...like, before you can shoot, you gotta remove the safety....

You did very well.  Her whole argument seems to based on the fact that she doesn't trust herself not to "snap" in a stressful situation, therefore everyone else in the world must be equally prone to "snapping".  Fallacious argument on her part.  You stayed logical and non-confrontational.  Pat yourself on the back.

You could have brought up that the kids at Columbine already broke x amount of gun laws, so x amount more wouldn't stop them.

ETA: decent job overall.

Well when she started playing the "what could I have done, where could I have gone" card, I started to realize this would go no where.

Ask her if she thinks the cops should have guns?

Then, bring up stories where cops have murdered people, busted for drugs etc.   I know here in Memphis the number of cops in jail is more than CCW folks.

I tried finding a statistic for that in Tx, but my google-fu was weak.

You failed, for having a face-book account and arguing on it.

What's wrong with facebook? It's not an over the top shrine to yourself like myspace. Old friends and relatives live far away, it's a great way to stay in touch with the ones I care to. What's an easier method, carrier pigeon?
