| I have an ancient scope, 3-9x. I mounted it on a rifle and it's not as cool as many, but it's made in Japan and appears well made. Anyone have any experience with them? |

Pretty sure that’s a Montgomery Ward house brand put on firearms and related equipment made by a variety of other manufacturers.
Sorta like J.C. Higgins with Sears. Probably not worth much of anything. I don’t know when Wards stopped carrying firearms, but a wild guess would be sometime in the 1970’s at the latest. Check e-bay (assuming they still allow scary stuff like optics) and you might find something like yours and get an idea of its value. |

I'm actually not too concerned with the value, mainly if it's an ok scope. |

Take it out, shoot it, and see if it holds a zero. Also move the adjustment screws around and see if that moves the point of impact consistently. And see if you can get it to return to zero properly by going backwards with those adjustment screws. While I’d be reluctant to do it to a scope this old, you could also submerge it in a bucket of water and see if you get any bubbles (which means it’s not waterproof). Problem is, if it isn’t you’ve now got a mess on your hands - and a long since expired warrantee! |
| Wards quit carrying guns and such in the late 70's - early 80's. I still have a Tasco scope I got thru them in either 79 or 80. But like said, it's likely a lower end make/model marked with Wards store label. It won't be a cutting edge scope for a precision rig but should work well enough on a deer rifle. And probably be a great choice on a good .22lr rifle. |
