I just had an impacted and abcessed wisdom tooth removed. I've got about 10mg of Oxycodone in me, so I'm not feeling much, if any pain. But I want to make sure I don't get dry socket.
I don't use straws. They told me no to spit, but shit, I'm bleeing, I'm not swallowing it. So talk to me. NEW oh, so how long do I have to worry about this? It came out monday, am I good to go? |

Did they give you gauze for the bleeding? I was told to keep it in for 24-48 hrs and change it out regularly, depending on how long it bled at the site.
I was also given this curved syringe to wash out food particles from the sockets. If they didn't give you either of these, maybe ask for them. Hope all goes well. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed 3 months ago without incident - no dry sockets, was eating regular foods 3 days later. |

Seriously, you'll be fine. I had the same thing done on both lower teeth. They bleed a shitload and there's blood going everywhere and your bed gets all bloody and your shirt is bloody and your hands are bloody and you might not think that you have enough blood left but it will quit eventually and after a few days you'll be back to normal.
Getting teeth pulled is the absolute worst. It's the thing I hate the most besides kidney stones. |

Do the salt water rinse but don't spit.
Use Kosher salt or sea salt, it tasters a lot better. It's the working up of the suction to collect it in your mouth and the force of the expulsion that opens the wound back up. Swish it around by tossing your head. Don't agitate by moving your cheeks around like you normally would. It's a little messy, but bend over the sink and just let it run out of your mouth. It's not the smoke that causes dry sockets, it's the suction of the draw that does it. |

they gave me a prescription for oxy when i had an impacted molar removed. i didn't take it. i get constipated when i take painkillers.
my oral surgeon told me not to swish for a few days and pack it until heavy bleeding stopped. he said swishing or spitting would remove the forming clot. |
| When I got my wisdom teeth removed, I had one socket go dry. It did hurt, but it wasn't as bad as people say. All I had to do was go down to the dentist and they plugged it with a clove oil soaked gauze strip. It was like someone flipped a switch, the pain went away instantly. |
You sissy  , I had 4 impacted molars removed with no pain meds. I second the above with flushing out the holes but you can only do this once the stitches dissolve. Be sure to rinse with salt water after you use the plastic syringe and drink plenty of soups and jello.

I had two dry sockets when i got mine pulled and the pain wasn't that bad. I went back to the dentist on a follow up and he packed some pepper mint tasting stuff in the holes. Fixed em right up and as i understand it you can just buy the stuff in the drug store and do it yourself. |

I had a dry socket after my wisdom teeth were extracted. It was the most mind numbing pain I have ever experienced in my life full of broken bones, dislocated joints and deep cuts.
Getting the socket packed with gauze stopped the pain almost instantly. Couple days later he pulled it out and I was fine. I wish I had realized what was going on earlier so I could have had it done sooner. The moral of the story is not to be afraid to tell your dentist you are in pain. |

| I had my wisdom teeth (ALL 4 OF THEM) removed a few months ago. When i was recovering, instead of trying to suck the spit/blood etc out of my mouth to spit I would just kinda tilt my head down and let it drain out..just kinda' let it drool out. its ok to spit the shit out but they don't want you creating any suction in your mouth. some paper towels or TP in your mouth to soak it up works too. |
BTDT A dry socket occurs when your dumbass dentist swabs a bunch of cotton balls down in there and tells you to change them as needed. You need it to scab over. There needs to be blood in there. Do not swab it clean. That is the definition of dry socket. Clean and dry with nothing covering the bone exposed when the tooth was pulled. Put a cotton ball in there, but do not keep pulling it out every 5 minutes. I learned this the hard way. The dentist is negligent in not explaining why and how a dry socket occurs.  They give the usual "You don't want to get a dry socket"! Then neglect to explain the cause.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time while my wife was in her first year of dental school. No, she did not do the surgery, but she watched while the oral surgeon resident did it. She got woozy when she saw my jaw bone.
Anyway, 2 of them were impacted and I had alot of pain afterwards. I didn't get a dry socket, but one of them filled up with food particles that rotted as time went by. That was the nastiest, smell and taste I've ever had. I nearly puked when I flushed the mung out. (dumbasses forgot to give me the curved platic injector for cleaning out the wounds) Anyway, I guy I worked with at the time had all 4 of his removed a while after mine and didn't take a single pain pill. He was eating mexican food the next evening. Bastard. |
