Help me install Ubuntu on a thumb drive.   Not a "live CD" that can't be updated or anything, but a full install.

I tried last night, and wound up with a mess.   The computer wouldn't boot from the USB drive and the fucking installer dumped GRUB onto my XP drive of my laptop disabling windows.  (FDISK /MBR from an old Windows 98 disk fixed that).

What I'd like to ideally do is have a full Linux set up on my 8 GB thumb drive.    I know it will only work with this particular computer, but that's fine... I just want it to not screw with my hard disks.

I don't know if you can do it with your laptop, but when I put Ubuntu on a USB drive I simply unplugged my hard drive to make sure nothing affected it.  And it boots on all computers I've tried so far.

Thanks.

I think I'll give one of their "persistent" live cd rolls a try –– with one the larger loopfiles.

i did something like this a year or two ago, and even set it up so I could save my documents to the thumb drive. Only problem was I kept corrupting the mbr. I could make versions that would boot and run just fine, but they had to be read only in order to remain stable.

OK, I just finished a nice install of Ubuntu 9.04 "persistent" using the instructions on that site.

Works good.  Posting from the pen-drive install right now.

I'll play with installing drivers, etc., for the video and DVD stuff and then see how it goes.

So far I like it quite a bit.

Gonzo,

Did your install method do anything special for flash drive installation to prevent constant write actions to that flash drive?  If not  then youll quickly ruin your thumb drive.  These things have a finite number of times they can be written to.  Normal use of a thumb drive will never approach this limit but using it as you are now will unless certain things are done.

Puppy linux is the way I normally do this, and it handles what Im talking about fine.  They also have a "community edition" or "CE install" that is a few point release behind the latest release where it has TONS of all the stuff you need already ready to go.
