I downloaded an episode of its always sunny in philadelphia on limewire but it says it needs a codec to play the video what is this and how do I get it, thanks

Think of it as a translator that allows your media player to read other languages (aka: encoding methods/ file types). Google search for K-lite codec pack. I'm not up to the minute anymore with that stuff though, someone else may be able to point you to a later and greater codec package.

Did you try google?

A codec properly decodes the video in a way that your computer can play it.  There's a ton of codecs out there, which does it say you need?

install k-lite, basic version. If not worky - install full.

COmpress / DECompress

you need to get the compressor (CODEC) that was used to make the file or one that will play this kind of file.   Usually Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Real would work unless its a real specialized thing...
