I know a while back, someone had an ad in the EE for tannerite. Don't remember the price or details, and it may still be there, but I can't find it. Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of a more reasonably priced alternative to tannerite.com for purchasing exploding targets. Thanks a bunch.

Ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder.
basically 95:5 by weight. Aluminum powder can be had from pyrotechnic supply places for something like 12 to 14 bucks a pound. Ammonium nitrate is 33.5 or 34-0-0 fertilizer. It's alot harder to find than it used to be, but can still be found at some feed stores. Also ebay. I think the last time I bought it off ebay, it was something like a buck a pound. I think you could also use potassium nitrate instead of ammonium nitrate, too. I think alot of different chemical stump removers are basically just potassium nitrate. eta: It's not quite as sensitive as name-brand tannerite, but just about any rifle round will still set it off. |

Making it yourself... Sounds a little too much like work to me. Where would I get the ingredients, and how would I know the true composition of those ingredients, to know what the ratio of the mixture should be? Apperently you can make it for quite a bit cheaper thn you can buy it for, and it's NOT just 95% amonium nitrate to 5% Al powder like has been posted before. AKA right above me by a few seconds?
You need some type of sensitizer added. |

I've bought from http://www.intheredexplodingtargets.com and been very satisfied.
Damn. Beat by exactly 1 minute. |

You need some type of sensitizer added. I've made shit tons out of just those two ingredients and it works just fine. |

It can fizzle and sputter and pop I hear if just the two ingredients. We need Keith_J. (and I need to try it now!) |

I'm no explosives expert, but I think it requires a certain degree of containment to be reliable. I've had fizzles from rolling it in tinfoil and shooting it. But I've never had a fizzle from putting it in something like a plastic bottle. Theoretically, I believe you could also detonate ammonium nitrate by itself, if you imparted enough energy to it. |

I've shot tannerite before, and am familiar with the "experience". Is this stuff tannerite, or something else? Also, I don't see 24 lbs. for $64.50. Only thing I see for that price is 20 lbs. of plain ammonium nitrate.

A primary explosive. Just about all of which are dangerous to make. Not to mention illegal. Don't get caught. |

AN can also be had at Wally World... Instant cold packs from the first aid section contain a fair amount of AN. Actually they have AN and water seperated by a thin plastic layer... Carefully removing the AN should work. That is damned expensive though. |

If we're going to do it the worky way, I recommend making a compost barrel and making your own potassium nitrate from the mulch and ashes. When nitre beds are outlawed, only outlaws will have nitre beds! |

What mesh? I have a five pounds of 325 mesh I might try this with..... |

If it doesn't, try milling it further in a rock tumbler with some lead balls for media. |
