Four more days left until I can go pick up my newest acquisition.  I am excited.  This will be my first gun in .30-30.

What are recommendations for good .30-30 target loads?

Eta:

The new-to-me rifle is an H&R Handi-Rifle.  I had never seen a break open .30-30 before and I thought it too unique to pass up.

What rifle did you get?

Just wondering how long do you have to wait for a rifle in Ca?

I have a 1941 model 94 that I got from my Grandfather that I haven't shot in many years. I have the componets and dies just too busy loading other calibers.

You handloading? If so, I have a good recipe for some deer loads.

I like the .30-30, BTW. My Dad and brothers hunt with them. I hunt with my M1A, though.

Get a sellection of ammo such remmy, winny and hornaday in 150 to 165 grain. See what it likes and go from there.

I have 2 marlin 336's, one made in the 50'and the other in 1969. One loves win and the other likes rem or hornday but hates winchester. Both shoot a littl tighter with the 165 grain loads though.

Oh, pics will be coming.  I have a thread posted the first day I got it.  I'll probably post the pics there.

I got an H&R Handi-Rifle.  Not really what I was going for, but it was so unique I couldn't pass it up.

I'll be looking for a box of manufactured ammo to start off with since I don't have reloading equipment at the moment, and I'm not really setting up to reload yet.  Though, my gf told me this week we are going to be rearranging the apartment and buying reloading equipment.

IMO there's little point in handloading the 30-30.  Factory ammo is cheap and accurate enough for iron sight shooting.  Please tell me you have no plans to scope the rifle.

If you are going to handload, do it cheap.  Bulk bullets and IMR 3031 ought to do the trick.

Thanks for the tip.  The rifle comes with a scope rail, but I'm not sure if I will get one.  I may save my scope funds for a Marlin lever action .30-30 which will likely be the next gun down the line.  I really like open-sight shooting, so I may do that for a while.  I've been informed in my other thread that my rifle should be a solid shooter either way.

For factory ammo, I have had the best luck with winchester 170 soft point. This is the only caliber I have ever handloaded for and not been able to get an accuracy increase over factory ammo, so I am doing something wrong. Good luck and post pics when you can.

Thanks! My grandfather taught me to hunt and shoot, I used his model 94 until I bought this 94AE and put receiver sights in stead of the dovetail. First firearm I ever bought. It's not pre-64 or anything, but it's one of my favorite rifles.

For milsurp rifles a good mild load is a cast bullet with gas check over 16.5 gr of 2400.  Better check on the milsurp sites and the cast Boolet site and verify this.  The 30-30 is close to a .308 but with somewhat less case capacity.  15 gr might be better for the 30-30.  I'd place each round into the chamber or on the elevator and not run them through the magazine.  I drop the rifle bullets into water to quench them, pistol bullets are air cooled.

With cast bullets you shoot enough to have fun.

As long as a 30-30 is NOT micro grove they make a very decent cast bullet gun. Standard 30-30 load is a 150gr bullet @ 2300fps+/-. The basic cast load is a 190gr at 1800-2000fps so you are really near the same power range.

If your 30-30 is micro-grove some claim ok cast bullet shooting, some don't.

Excellent.  Good sights are always good.  The sights on my new rifle looked excellent to me.

I see a lot of love for .30-30 in here, which makes me happy.  I'm not too worried about being accused of being a fudd.  I've been in the market for some time for a cheap, available "everything" rifle caliber.  .30-30 is one of them.

Great pics, everyone.

I just got one too! I had an old winchester but sold it and got the marlin instead. I sighted it in with hornady leverevolution ammo and am pretty impressed. I'll take a pic, it's right here in my storeroom.

The winnie I had was one of the old ones with top eject. Since my eyes are older than I am, using iron sites is iffy, I would not want to try and shoot a deer at 100 yards with iron sites, at least not with the ones on that gun. I sold it back to the person I bought if from for the same price. That was a few years ago. This year I decided I would like a 30-30 and my friends all seem to like their marlins.

It's like a ruger 10/22, there are some models of guns that are just staples.

+1   I killed my first deer many years ago with this exact combination.  The 30-30 is a wonderfully balanced round with little recoil and good power.

If you load H335 for .223, it also works well in the .30-30.  My Marlin likes the Remington 150 grain bulk pack (100 per bag) soft points..........consult the Hodgdon reloading manual or website for powder weights.  I get consistent 1 1/2" groups at 100yds with a fixed 4x scope.

10 day wait? Shit, that sucks.

I could walk into any gun store, plop down the cash, fill out the form, show the CHL (they can skip calling NICS if I show the CHL) and walk out with the gun.  Takes 30 minutes tops.

Yeah, I kinda wish we had that here too.

But the 2 minute phone call is still way better than any official "waiting period".

(Also, I knew that CA had a 10-day wait on handguns, but didn't think that they had the same for long guns as well...)

One of the best cast-bullet rifle rounds in existence. I highly recommend the Lyman #311041 flat nose, 173(ish) grain bullet mould. It was designed for the .30-30, and it's a good one. I cast them of straight wheelweights and load them over 18.5 grains of 2400 for about 1800 fps.

DAng, people don't read.

It's a single shot. Buy some factory stuff to see what it shoots best.

When you start to reload, you can use spitzers, which may make it shoot more accurately. I know spitzers reduce group sizes in my Marlin.

If you reload with spitzers, go ahead and scope the rifle. You'll be very pleased and probably surprised at the accuracy. I hear good things about the H&R.

(When I load spitzers in my Marlin, I only put one in the mag and one in the chamber. Loads that work in the Marlin won't cycle in my Winchester '94. Too long.)

The H&R Handi-Rifle in .30-.30 may surprise you. The right handloads will ballistic tip Noslers or some such will require a scope if you want to extract all the range it's capable of. Plan on spending some coin for the right scope. Something compact to fit the sleek lines of the H&R.
Here's a link to get started. Although it references TC single shots, the hand loading info is the same.
And yes I have one.

When you want to explore an Improved version, look here.

I have a pre-64 Model 94 with a Lyman reciever sight on it that is a good shooter.
I shoot cast bullets in it. I have a few boxes of that Hornaday stuff but I have never shot any of it. I am hoping some day I can hunt with it. So, I am holding onto the Hornady stuff for that. I don't have the guts to take it out here in Nevada. I always think that the minute I take the .30-30 I will see the next world record at 300 yards and wish I had a bolt gun. But, the same goes for my milsurps. I would love to get a deer with my K31 or an M1. At least with those I know I could hit a deer at 300 yards.

Contrary to pouplar belief (most gun rags) , they've taken everything from Florida to Alaska. Yea, Brown bear and Moose.

Maybe not a Polar bear, but I wouldn't feel underpowered facing one down, ........... if I had a lever action.

And then you could graduate to the 35 Rem.

A 10 day wait for a 30-30

It's a great round, but 30-06 is the ultimate hunting round...accurate, powerfull and extremly versatile.

Marlin makes the best lever guns by far...less expensive, stronger and easier to take down and clean.

I need to get myself another .30-30.......it's an excellent rifle
8/17/2009 4:44:23 PM EDT
[#46]
And here it is:

It's obviously been well loved––the furniture has the thrown-down-the-driveway appearance, but I'll take it.  It was an impulse buy and I obviously knew nothing about them before I bought it.  It's heavier than I remembered, but very comfortable in my hands.  If I needed it to, I am confident it would feed my family quite well.  I was mistaken about the price.  It was $250 w/o tax, not $275.  Not great, but it's about what I can expect around here.  NIB, this thing would probably retail at a store around here for over $300 I warrant.

Today was an even more special day for me, because I finally fixed my favorite handgun, my Bersa Thunder .380.  So, I shot an updated family pic:

Pictured:

Handguns (left to right): AMT Backup in .380, Bersa Thunder DLX .380, S&W Sigma VE 9mm, 1922 Colt Police Positive .38 Special

Long guns (top to bottom): Mossberg 500c 20ga, Savage Model 93 .22 wmr (the gun that started all this), and new addition H&R Handi-Rifle in .30-30.

The store was packed full of people, today.  Mostly looking at handguns and shotguns.  I had to drive all out to Rosedale (about 20 mins) to find any .30-30 under $45 too.  I'm excited.  It'll probably be another month or two before I have the time or money to go shoot it, but I can't wait.

That's awesome.  I couldn't find any of that, today anywhere.  Just some Winchester Super X 150gr power points.  I just wanted some in the house for now and we'll see how this thing likes them.  I'll likely order some on my next check including the Lever Evolution.

NineLivez: I moved here from Oregon.  25 minutes at most for the background check and running my debit card through the machine and then I get to take it home.  I will never get used to waiting.  It's agonizing.
