Is this pelican case sufficient to pack in my luggage? First time flying where I can CCW at my destination. The regs aren't completely clear to me, can my mags be loaded and stored in the locked box like they are in this photo? I cut the foam to carry either my G19 or G26 and mags. |
| box is fine and yes you can have magazines in the box but they can't be loaded, the ammo has to be in a factory box, or a box specifically made for ammunition. yes the ammo can be kept in the box with the gun<per TSA, some airlines don't like it but if they say something just go with it and seperate the ammo. go to the TSA web site and print it out. be nice when you tell them you want to check a gun, some of them get a little freaked out. |

Quoted: I'm pretty sure ammo and firearm have to be separated. I think ready to go in magazines is a no-no. Nevermind the whole fact that it's in the luggage compartment. In any case, call the airline and they can give you the correct information.

| You need to keep the ammo in the original packaging . Go to counter tell them you want to check a firearm . It must be unloaded and cleared . you will tag the weapon then go to tsa for another check then lock your box put it in your bag with the ammo seperate from the gun in the same bag . LOCK YOUR BAG ! Go flying . it's no big deal .. I do it 4 to 5 times a month .. |

Here is from Alaska's website, I don't know if there is any container more specifically designed for ammunition than the magazine: "Ammunition—up to 50 lbs.(domestic) and 11 lbs. (international - where permitted) may be checked, if securely packed in the original manufacturer's package or in a container designed for ammunition and of sufficient strength to protect it from accidental crushing or discharge (i.e. wood, fiber, plastic, or metal). The projectile must be no larger than 11/16" in diameter, the size of a dime. Ammunition may be checked with or separately from the firearm. Spent ammunition shells will be accepted in checked baggage provided they meet the same acceptance procedures as live ammunition (e.g. packed in a crush-proof case)." |

The pelican case locked inside your bag is fine, it just has to be "locked so it cannot be opened" so think...no cracks big enough to bring your gun out of. I've flown quite a few times with guns and ammo and it's painless. The ammo cannot be in mags unless the ammuniton is completely enclosed. Think PMAG with the cover on it. Honestly, you can just carry it in a normal ammo box, it doesn't need to be locked. The airlines are cool with it being in it's original cardboard box. If it's your first time, check the TSA regs and the Airline regs before you roll out. Don't be nervous about it though, just declare it at the ticket counter when you check your bag and they will know exactly what to do and probably won't even act surprised. Feel free to IM me if you have any questions on the process. Oh...one other thing, I know you're not traveling with rifles, but in the case you ever do. keep your bag check reciept because they won't put your rifle on the carousel and you'll need it to get your case back. |
