I have always taken a plane to from my state to other 2A friendly states with the appropriate FOPA safeguards or a car where the drive was 3 or 4 hours. However, next weekend will be the first time I will be travelling by car from Connecticut to Tennessee. I will, unfortunately, have to pass through NY to get there. Flying is not an option this time.

I will be travelling with NFA items (SBRs and suppressors) and ammo in a Grand Cherokee. The plan is everything in hard cases with Yale tumbler locks on them. Ammo in original boxes also locked in a seperate hard case with tumbler locks. ABout 2k rounds of ammo and around 20 weapons/suppressors are going out for this trip.

Now- I know FOPA states you must make best time through a non-friendly 2A state. My current route is CT/NY/PA/WV/VA/TN. Excpet for NY everything I have is legal in the other states.

This is the question: I will not be able to do a 16 hour drive straight through. I know if you remove the weapons from the vehicle that you null FOPA. Does this nullification only apply to states where the weapons are illegal? In other words if I pull over into a hotel in Virginia where everything is legal and bring the cases up to the room am I still covered with FOPA?

And yes- I have my .20s and they are good for the entire month of August.

Thanks

Tony K, moderator of the Class3 forum here could probably best answer your question.

Yes you can stop in Virginia.

Besides, I suspect that if someone put up in a hotel and was charged their test case would come back in their favor, with Heart of Atlanta Hotel cited all over the place.

My understanding is yes.

If they are not ilegal where you are going, and are legal in the state where you are, there is no issue.

NYS though, they do what they want.   I would make sure that I had a full tank of gas/full belly/empty bladder before I crossed the state line.
