I get the part about the govt giving $4500 if your clunker qualifies.  My question is, do you also get trade-in value too?  Example:  I trade in a vehicle worth $10K Blue Book, already paid off, do I get $4500 plus the $10K trade-in?

Yeah, well...not so much.

A condition of accepting the .gov money is that the car goes immediately to the scrapyard.  The program only works if the vehicle being traded is worth substantially less than the .gov money.

It is another form of WELFARE and wealth redistribution!!!

Hmmm.... So I'm looking at the wording on the site and it doesn't say that the new vehicle can't be a motorcycle (which would definitely make the cut if all they're going on is difference in mileage!).

I don't think they thought this through,as usual.

I think I also remember that your clunker doesn't go to a scrap yard either. No parts from the vehicle can ever be re-used and must be totally destroyed. So people looking for a cheap spare part or someone later on down the road that wants to restore a classic will have a much more difficult time doing so.

As I said, I vaguely remember hearing something like this. Can anyone else confirm?

The dealer has to pour this special solution (a liquid mixed with some type of abrasive) in the engine and trans of the vehicle and run it till it locks up. Im not lying, NO SHIT.

Sorry that is BS.

I work at a dealer and we do no such thing. We park them off to the side and they will be picked up like they are later by a car carrier and taken to be crushed.

Also no classics will be destroyed as the cars can't be too old to qualify.

Also you can use it to buy a foreign car make not just the big three.
That makes the least sense to me cause now .Gov owns part of GM and Chrysler and you can use our tax money to go buy a Honda,Nissan,Toyota.

Found it.   It says.

Under cash for clunkers, the government is advising car dealers to replace a trade-in's engine oil with a sodium silicate solution and run the engine to ruin it before giving or selling the car to a scrap dealer.

It is advised but NOT required.  We have not seen it in our area. Good info though.

Except the ghetto vermin can't afford a new car, so this program doesn't help them.

The new car has to get 10mpg more than the old one to get the full $4500 credit.  Otherwise, it's only $3500.

I am thinking about trading in with this program. I have a 2002 Kia Sedona Minivan, it runs like a champ, and is in pretty good condition, but I wouldn't get $4500, or even 3500 selling it myself, or trading it. While the van is in good shape, it needs yet another break job (the thing is crazy heavy, and needs pads every 25K or so), it is over due for a timing belt (water pump at the same time of course), and last weekend the AC spring a leak, the replacement piping is about $300. With all maintenance done and documented I MIGHT be able to sell it myself for $3500-4,000, the parts will be about $500-600 for everything it needs, and even then I still really need to replace the front seats because on of the bolts in the drivers seat is threaded into sheet metal, and is forever working lose (loctite didn't help).

I just can't decide if I want to go with another minivan, or something smaller, my wife would be the primary driver and she would probably prefer a smaller car. Maybe a PT Cruiser or Dodge Caliber, from what I have seen I could get either of those brand new for about 7K after the Obama money and the Chrysler rebates.

Actually so far the biggest rip off I have seen is dealers absolutely refusing to come down off of sticker when you are trading on the CARS program. I talked to a guy who bought a Kia Soul and traded in some POS clunker, he was bragging how he only paid 10K for it, and the sticker was almost fifteen. I was in the Kia dealer today checking the price on some parts, and they had a sign up offering a good discount on the Soul, and a rebate, I seem to remember the sign offering the car for about 11K, and that was without the Obama money, so basically the dealer got $3500 of that money, and shafted the buyer by acting like the Government subsidy is coming out of their profit. If I were a dealer I would be getting my hands on every single low end car my brand sold and discounting the hell out of them, I am sure that with modest discounts they would be able to offer low enough prices to sell all the cars they can get.

The "problem" with this program is that a significant % of the population (including arfcom) is simply too stupid to understand it.

I got $4500 for trading in a 14 MPG vehicle on a 19 MPG vehicle. I could have received $3500 if I had purchased a 16MPG vehicle

The other problem with it is that it rewards those who made poor choices.  I don't qualify because 8 years ago I chose to buy a car that got good gas mileage.  Yet another government bailout I don't qualify for because I'm responsible.  Oh well, in a couple of years, there will be a lot of used cars with good mileage on the market.
