My mother-in-law asked me about it and I have absolutely no idea. Google gives a bunch of options but I thought I would ask the hive to see if anybody has any experience with this type of device.

She has a 16 yr old with a new ride that was purchased for her. She trusts her daughter but at the same time she doesn't. She's been through some tough times with another sister-in-law of mine and doesn't want to go through it again.

Anybody have any experience with these types of things?

You can even use a Garmin mapping GPS hidden in the car.  It works... trust me.

http://zoombak.com/ allows real-time tracking with a subscription fee.

http://www.gpstrackingkey.com/ doesn't offer real-time tracking, so you'd have to retrieve the device from the car and hook it to a computer.

Also, most cell phone providers offer a tracking solution for parents like Verizon's Chaperone.

One of my clients uses a  mobile phone with the family tracker plan. He plants them under the dash, hard wired into the cig lighter from the back.

he said it was the lowest cost GPS tracking system he found, he monitors it through a web app.

No he doesn't spy on his workers. They sign a form stating that if they drive a company car, they are OK with the company vehicle being tracked via GPS.

Does she need real-time position info, just just to keep track of where the vehicle has been?

Many/most regular GPS units will store a track which you can look at later.

A Builder client of mine uses Zoombak.  It is cellular/GPS.  He uses them on his work trailers, and sets up a "safe zone" for them.
If they move out of that safe zone, it texts and/or e-mails him.
Pretty cool, and pretty inexpensive.

There is some kind of gps cops use to track vehicles, but I have no idea how it costs. I just know that you can stick it on a car (or in a bag etc) and it will transmit the location and travel etc

Boy getting caught with that zoomback thing looks like a good way to incur some lawyer bills

I love this place. Thanks for the intel guys.  We certainly have something to work with.

I'll have to check with her on what she actually wants to do. I'm thinking she will like the text option outside the safe zone. The girl is a computer whiz and I don't think it will take her long to figure out Mom has an application on the home PC that's tracking her.
