I hooked up a camera and headphone set to my computer.(so my wife can talk to her family overseas for free).

My computer says it cannot find the microphone even though it is hooked up. What can I try to get it working. Camera and headphone speakers are working fine.

Thanks

Anjan9 as good info

Also, a lot of those cheapass mics have broken wires - especially when you need them most!

Get a USB headset for about $20. I use Radio Shacks GigWare. The transfer rate is much better on those. I talk to folks in England and Australia on a weekly basis, daily across the country.

Are you using Windows XP?  If so try this:

Go to control panel, make it classic view.

Then, go to "Sound and Audio Devices".

Click on the Audio tab.

In the "Sound recording" area, click "Volume".

Make sure the Microphone is selected and the volume isn't turned down.
