Antec came out with an "open enclosure" case that looks exceedingly cool.

it takes full size ATX motherboards, full size power supply, has room for triple SLI vid cards, 2 ODD's, 2 HDD's, 92mm fan on front, 250mm fan on top, and 4 more external HDD's clip onto the outside. mobo tray, PSU and drives are quick-release and slide out. since it has room for all that, it's going to be large. much larger than it looks in the picture. 13(H), 14.8(W), 16.5(D).

the huge fan on top does a few things. for one, it blows out dust that you would think accumulates in an open-air computer. it also has variable speed and 3 LED color options. but on the other hand, its low clearance requires very low profile HSF's. but, the massive (and quiet) airflow negates that need: low profile is just fine.

they also made a smaller one, the Mini-Skeleton. 1 ODD, 2 HDD's (external only), and a 140mm fan on top. much smaller at 7.5(H), 8.3(W), 9.1(D). which is fantastically small. which is what I want.

back

back of the mini

so the Mini is perfect for the top of a desk. cute as a bug's ear too. you would think everybody that doesn't want the full-sized monstrosity but likes the looks would love the Mini. right?

BUT they FUCKED it UP!

it's mini-ITX, not micro-ATX!

which has 1 PCI-e slot, uses a weak power supply, only Atom CPU's and a pitifully small selection of motherboards to choose from. if they would have went with micro-ATX it would still be small but have 4 slots, normal power supply and whatever CPU and mobo you want. FUCK!!! why didn't they do that?

just bitchin'.

Probably due to the open form factor, a non atom chip would probably heat up pretty quick?

ETA: looks bad ass though and probably good enough for the casual user

No thanks.

I think it would be cooled just as good as in the full sized version. probably with a 150mm fan.

so..., its a computer in a round rack?

Go ahead, buy one and try to hide all the cables, then well see how "nice" it looks

no, it would be cooled just like it is in the full sized version. I'd guess they would have a 150mm fan.

So even if it had a pretty good fan airflow is going to be minimized by the open case design, so the processor stays cool what about the rest of the internals? Why did they put the powersupply under the motherboard? it seems like a bad idea since heat rises

ETA: is that a big fan on the very top? if so I can see how this will work with an atom processor. Atoms chips done use very much power and thus dont produce much heat

Cuz shielding isn't important... all those other cases are made of metal or metal lined just for looks.

that's a good point, but from the reviews I read, the open case turns out to have better airflow than closed cases, it is cooler. they say the panels restrict airflow, so no panels must be improving it because it is cooler. as for the PSU under the mobo, PSU's have their own fans, the heat doesn't go up.
ETA: FUCK Atom CPU's.

Would have been better if they made it taller instead of wider. No one wants that much desk space vanishing.

Atom processors are good for people like my mother, She surfs the web and creates some power point presentations for work (oh yeah and iTunes) so minimal power usages is a bonus for her and with windows 7 coming out I could definatly see using this for a small setup some where.

Look at the last picture, you can see by comparing the size of the DVD-rom that its actually super small.

From what I've read on it, it's designed to be a test frame, not something you actually build a permanent rig on.  The whole "open case" design was to allow very easy hot-swapping of parts while doing tests and the like.  I'd never want to use something like that as a dedicated rig, heating issues would be an absolute bitch since you don't actually have any sort of plenum to encourage air flow.

+1 on the full size version, like some kind of rack, would probably need the mobo vertical instead of horizontal to reduce the footprint

Last pic is of the worthless mini that no one would use anyway. Look at the full size - there's nearly room for three optical drives side by side!

Ah, I see I was under the impression that it was just the one on the bottom. STill fairly small

do you want 1 optical drive, 2 HDD's, and a teeny footprint? you want the Mini. IF ONLY IT WAS MICRO-ATX!

there is an Urban Commandos section for a reason

no matter how many fans you have, dust will always be a problem. Hell, dust accumulates on fans, you certainly can't use them to blow it off

I just leave the side panel off mine.
