It was an obvious fishing expedition.
There is a rodeo in town that is notorious for producing lots of drunk people. There were several people pulled over along the road. When I came to a complete stop at the stop sign and then made a right turn the only car that was behind me was a Montana Highway Patrolman. He lit me up. His reason...? He says I should have waited for him to pass by before turning onto the road he was on...but he was half a block away, and nowhere near close enough that I would have to yield. The good news is this is MT and he recognized me from somewhere. I handed him my driver's license and my CWP. He said, "do you have a weapon on you?" I answered, "Yes. On my right hip." To which he replied, "Okay. If you don't touch yours I won't touch mine. Sound good?" Then he said, "It's good your that you have it on you. A lot of people have a CWP but never carry." While he was running my license I remembered where I knew him from - he was a senior cadet at the MT LE Academy 2 1/2 years ago when I applied and tested for the MT Highway Patrol...he administered the situp portion of the PT test (MHP gave me an interview at the time but I had to decline because of family issues). |

That's funny...I'd have to use that line if I were a police officer. That's cool that he didn't act like a douche about it or disarm you. I've never understood that anyway...what the hell does disarming someone who bothered to get a CCW license AND took the time to tell you about it do? I like his approach much better. |

I was born/hatched in Billings. Whats it like there? Never got the chance to grow up there. Wait, i still havent grown up. Billings? I don't often get down there (I'm in the Helena area) and when I do I'm just passing through. I do know that when the legislature was in session and we were trying to get the MT Self-Defense Clarification and Expansion Act passed the Yellowstone County Attorney was always speaking against the bill saying it would allow the gang bangers so prevalent in Billings to kill one another and then claim self-defense, thus making it difficult to prosecute them. He showed lots of pictures of gang violence and warned us that if we start to see lots of kids wearing Nebraska Corn Husker sweatshirts it wasn't because they suddenly became Nebraska fans - that is the color and symbol for gangs coming from northern Mexico. They call themselves "Nortenos." He painted a picture of bloody streets and warned of the coming plague of gangsters that would wantonly rob and kill but still lobbied against a bill that greatly expanded the rights of individuals in MT to defend themselves. Go figure... By the way, his opposition was almost fruitless - the bill still passed, but we did lose permitless carry because of him and his cohorts (MT Sheriffs and Peace Officers Assoc.). |

Quoted: I was 30 miles from Helena a couple of weeks ago cutting firewood for my parents. Had a few firearms with us as a matter of habit. No LE involvement except with those that I knew. Great place MT.......just wish there were more jobs. SRM I was looking at your Avatar, did you think of stopping after the first pass? ![]() |
