Who is your vote for the most bad ass insect on the planet?
My vote goes to the Japanese Hornet

These things supposedly aren't aggressive toward humans, some people even keep them as pets. But it seems it makes whatever insect it comes across it's bitch. They are known to sometimes attack and kill Preying Mantis's.

Maybe you can't tell by the picture, but these things get about 6 inches long and look scary as fuck. Basically harmless though. We would pick them up all the time.

Aren't those poisonous? I was down in Fort Benning and they had this BIG ASS grasshoppers, like that big, and various colors. They said the black ones were poisonous to eat or something? Not that anyone would eat a grasshopper.

I agree with your choice.

Saw a thing on TV about them.  The way they destroyed an entire honeybee colony was the worst bug carnage I've ever witnessed.

Me too.  I used to keep them as pets and feed them crickets.

Second is probably click beetles.  Used to play with them as a kid

and found one in the sink the other day, that was about 1.25" long.

Third the big solid colored bees with the white spot on the "forehead".

We would catch those and tie a black thread, secured to shirt buttons,

around the thorax like a leash.  They'd fly all around you.

Warning!! Don't try it with the striped ones!!

in the tens of thousands in a matter of hours.  Badass.

We were talking about those the other day at home.

They are featured in the Hillary Swank
movie, The Reaping.

They don't seem to be as common these days.

Yep.  Damned painful sting, like getting hit with a stun gun (BT, DT) and a hot soldering iron, at the same time.  Voice of experience here.  It will make you puke, especially when you get hit on the belly.

That they hunt tarantulas makes them pretty bad assed.
