SHot my first coon last night. Bastard got in my trash two days ago and I have bee on the watch.

Well about 9:30 last night I see the thing run across my front yard heading for my trash cans. So I run down stairs and grab this.

It is loaded with 10 rounds of Rem Subsonics.

I run out the front door and catch him by the cans, I am about 15 yards away. Bap, Bap, double tap. He takes off running away.

I think crap, that was kinda loud and he kept moving. So, I run in the front door, click on my back floods, wait 30 seconds. Out the back door and there he is, bap, bap double tap. Takes off running diagnol to me, bap head shot, he is down, but trying to get up. Pull trigger click, case hung up, re rack, bap, bap. Dead

Wife starts yelling what are you doing, tell her I am lighting off some fire crackers, early 4th July.

Pretty big, I would say at least 15-20 pounds.

Leasons learned, .22 subsonics are pretty weak, unless you get a head shot. Shooting at smaller running targets in the dark when your addrenaline is pumping is harder than shooting paper targets in the light.

coons are tough critters.  Even with a good shot it seems .22 takes a bit to kill them IMO.

I never bothered with a .22. I live in the middle of nowhere, so the .223 got used, and it does an EXCELLENT job on coons.

I love shooting coons.

We go out at night with LED headlamps which REALLY light up their eyes and make them easy to see. We got 13 in our river bottom by just walking around and looking at trees

You know, this is the truth.  LED lights, whatever spectrum they broadcast is really reflected by the coloring inside animal eyes.

If you are serious about putting down coons, you will need a bigger gun.  I have never attempted to kill a coon with a .22.  My first one was with a .410 ga shotgun.  That took 2 shots.  Next coon I used a 20 ga.  That took two shots too.
Finally I used a 12 ga on the 3rd coon.  That one went down on the second shot as well!  Now I only use centerfire calibers.
One shot with a .223 is enough to punch Rocky's ticket.

I walked up to my deer stand one day and 2 coons ran up my tree.

I wasn't in the mood to share my tree, so I shot them with my bow. One fell right out and the other lodged itself in the crook of the tree. Blood everwhere, but the problem was solved. BUT that took 2 or my 3 arrows.
About 2 hours later a couple of deer came out. I stood up to shoot one and I look around and that damned coon is coming down that tree about 3 feet from me looking  eye to eye. I couldn't move or the deer were going to run off. that coon "climbed" right past me and got about 10 feet from the ground and just fell out of the tree. Remember I had ran a arrow through that sob about 2 hours before and thought he was long dead. They are tough to kill for sure.

I actually killed the deer too.

The meager .22lr is just fine for coons if you hit them behind the front shoulder. They may run for fifty yards but it's hard to make a living with 2 holes in each lung.  Their heads, on the other hand are nasty hard and their shape can deflect a .22 bullet.  I agree, though that a shotty at close range is MUCH more certain to drop them dead right there.

We hunted coons with dogs for many years and we always used 22lr subsonics.  You just HAVE to shoot them between the eyes as a body shot will just make for an angry coon comming down the tree to fight with the hounds.  Then again, the hounds were always ready for the fight if we screwed up a shot.

I have a skunk that is causing problems with our trash.  I have seen him a few times but shooting a skunk in the front yard is not something I think I want to do.  I expected the problem was a neighbor cat or dog but I was wrong...

Last year I was pulling up to a little ranch house we stay in during hunting season to find a coon getting at the corn in the back of my dads truck. He took off running and I sped up while reaching for my snake gun (.357 mod 65 loaded with 38 rat shot) when he made it to the fence he actually sat up on the post and just stopped to watch me. I KNEW I couldn't kill him with the rat shot (about 10-12 yards away from me) but I wanted to scare him enough to keep him away from the trucks. I put one pellet right between his eyes and folded him right up. I was point shooting left handed out the window and lucked my way into a downed coon. He took one more for good measure as he was still moving his legs a lot, but I have no doubt that if I had walked away he would have died within a few minuets. The little dot of blood between the eyes was the only mark on him

I have killed coons with most guns but that was the coolest so far.

.22 Mag with Federal 30 grain Sierra JHP works like a stroke of lightning on them! I despise coons.
