Was it militarily correct to show the paratroopers landing, then running to what looks like a barrel that contained their rifles? Was this commonplace? Did the US ever do that?

Do you mean Red Dawn and not the Arnold movie Red Heat? Red Heat was good too.

USGI have rifle cases
The Germans jumped without their weapons, and had centralized weapon drop caches... they took a lot of losses doing this.

And I have no idea what is Red Heat, but that's stuff I learned in the museum on Bragg/SF museum in Fayetteville

I remember in Red Dawn movie they dropped "heavy" stuff like the PKM and RPGs in the canister.

IIRC Russian Paratroopers carry AKs when the jump, but use door bundles(barrel) for RPK/RPD(light and medium machine guns) and RPGs/rocket propelled grenades.

More sensible militarily (you've always got a weapon on you), but harder on the knees/ankles/hips. I like those things where they drop the tethered pack just before they hit, so's the weight does not come down on their joints, but they still have all their stuff with them.
