We had our own hives growing up! Dad used to collect the honeycomb and get the honey out of 'em and sell jars upon jars of it. The most delicious honey I ever had in my life. I used to play around the hives all the time. Never got stung and was never scared of them.

I use to "rescue" my foster dad's bees from the goats' water trough when they were stuck in the middle with nothing to climb on when they were too wet to fly. I sometimes miss helping him with them.

I have done a lot of research on killer bees, because I do a lot of hiking in the hill country.  Killer bee attacks are seldom front page news, but there are tragic incidents in texas every year.  People and animals have died horrible deaths from killer be attacks even in texas.

Africanized (Killer) bees will attack almost without provocation.  The slightest thing will set them off, a animal or human getting to close to the nest, the sound of a tractor or lawn mower, even thunder.  And when they swarm, they will attack all warm blooded creatures within a quarter to half mile of the nest and can remain on the war path attacking anything up to eight ours.  Yup, simply getting within a quarter of a mile could get thousands of bees after you.  Attack swarms can easlily number in the thousands and can travel up to 25mph and follow you for up to half a mile, concentrating their attacks on your face and eyes.  One sting releases a pheromone that marks you as a danger for all other bees to attack.  And that pheromone release is like an LOUD air raid warning siren to all the bees in the nest.  Standing still, swatting them, or hiding under water will do nothing to stop them.  They will instinctivly hover over water waiting for you to rise for air.  The only thing you can do is drop everything and run while protecting your face with a towel or shirt!  I keep a protective anti bug mask with an internal frame in my pack fur jsut such emergencies.

Warning sings of an impending attack include: bees that deliberately fly into you, impacting against your body, or repeatedly buzzing around your head.  That is their way of saying back off your getting toooo close.  An dont swat at them.  Be gratefull for their warning and leave the area NOW!!

If you hear a loud buzzing noise in the distance, back away quietly, and do not disturb the nest.  The key to survival is respect from a safe distance and run with your face covered in an attack.

Other helpfull suggestions include: wear light colored clothing, killer bees will preferentially attack dark skin and dark clothing, and avoid fruity like fragrance, cologne or deoderant.

Hope this helps.  Be safe!

Thanks MeadowMuffin! We did have a hive of killer bees around right after we sold off our hives. Thankfully the hive wasn't too large and the authorities were able to get rid of it quickly enough before it became a huge problem. They are definitely not something to play around with.

We had to get rid of ours about 18 years or so ago. Mom was out in the garden watering the crop and one of the bees decided to sting her. Within 10 minutes her face swelled up and we had to rush her to the emergency room only to find out that she is allergic to bees. So dad sold off all the hives. I miss helping dad out with the hives. Those were some fun times.

easy solution.

Secure a military gas can to a littl red wagon. From a distance roll the wagon near bees, and run.

Shoot with API.

Yikes, anaphylactic shock is no joke.  I have had some swelling after past bee stings, so I may be borderline.

My foster parents got rid of theirs once Mom got too sick from her lymphodema for them to keep fostering kids. The bees and goats were mostly a way to get the foster kids' minds off their pasts and on something productive.

Edited because Jen can't spell today.

+1. MOST Bees are your friends.

My neighbor used to have a bee hive 6' from my property line and I never had a problem with them for years.  Very calm honey-producing insects.

Something happened to the hive and they died so he ordered a replacement.  ETA:  I remember now, he took too much honey in the Fall and they starved that Winter.  This new hive was fine until the first time he harvested the honey.  After that you couldn't get within 40' of the hive without one or more of them attacking you.  They finally had to go because neither one of us could work on our gardens without getting attacked.  I don't know what their problem was but they became aggressive and they kept at it for two years until he removed them.

I hope they leave them alone too. If not, they need to be given to someone who will not kill them. Bees do wondrous things for us.
