As always thank you for looking and taking the time to respond.  I am building a bunch of target stand and I need to know what size channel steel to order.  What is the common size wood does everyone use for the upright slats?  1x2?  

they are going to look like these.

yes 1x2's or commonly referred to as furring strips.

They are much smaller than the 1x2 would suggest.

yes 1x2's or commonly referred to as furring strips.

I made a target holder myself using a metal sign holder and attaching an aluminum bottom to it for weight and rust prevention. If it ends up getting shot all i have to do is reweld.

I built mine out of 2X4's and furring strips and it cost me about $10. When the furring strips get shot up I can replace them for a couple bucks It too all of 15 minutes to gutthings and screw them together. Plans here

I use pvc piping as a base and I rip stud grade 2x4s down on my table saw

3/4" x 1.5"  is the actual dimension of a 1x2

Go to a wood yard, maybe Home Depot. It will cost more to ship 'em than they cost.
