So I got ma puppy today, been working on him all day with his crate. He is good about going to kennel when commanded and things went well all day. Now it's time for bed. I cut off his water 2 hours ago and he has peed 3 times since then. Now he is kenneled in the other room and is yelping and howling like crazy. I would bring him in here but i think it wouldn't do anything but keep us up all night. The neighbors are gonna freak if he doesn't shut it soon.
What do I do? |

Quoted: They do that for a few nights, before they get use to it. Yep. He will forget it in the morning. Crate training is good for the dog. You didn't wear him out during the pee walks, did you? 0.25 mg diphenhydramine per pound. Take a teaspoon of the children's formula, just diphenhydramine, and dilute with 24 teaspoons of water. 1 teaspoon of this per 2 pounds. |

What do I do? big stuffed toy or hot water bottle. they need some comfort. i've done both- hundreds of times. |

Basically you took him away from his family into a new environment. They are fine during the first day cause it can be fun, but leave them alone and they realize and they realize they aren't home anymore and get scared, ect.... Just needs a little time to adapt to new environment then slowly move crate into next room if that's where you want it. Trying to keep from having separation anxiety. Edit to add: I never crated my dogs, just used a cardboard box when they were puppies, then moved them to another location after they were house trained. Never had any problems, they do what they are supposed to do, sleep on a dog bed in another room like they are supposed to, trained to retrieve / hunting dogs, don't get on the furniture, can set a plate of food on the floor and leave for hours to come back and find the food still there with them still staring at it until I tell them they can have it. |

I put the crate in the room across the hall from my bedroom and I left both doors open. The first couple nights suck but once he figures out that he hasn't been abandoned it gets better. After my dog got used to his new home I moved the crate to the opposite end of the house. |

If you do go visit him during the night, make sure you ignore him when you first walk into his view. Then sit next to the crate, then when he calms down talk to him. Do not re-enforce the crying gets attention thing. You should crate a single puppy in the same room you sleep in. After a few days as you get ready for bed they will get in the crate. Thats the Q to you you can move the crate. |

hot water bottle. I done this with my now more grown up, sleeps all night German Shepherd pup. Just take a empty pop bottle & fill it with warm water. It simulates the body heat of one of the litter mates. It won't shut him up the first few nights but it helps a little. For you, I suggest ear plugs. The first few nights are week is really rough on the both of you. Him/her cause he/she was kidnapped from his/her Mommy & litter mates, & you cause of the howling (from the pup being scared & alone), & lack of sleep (having to get up every couple of hours to let him out for some relief) til he is potty trained. |
