Eight of F1's major teams have been frustrated by deadlocked talks with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his controversial budget cap proposals. "The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship," said the teams. "We've no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship." Mosley was insistent on introducing a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a "financial arms race" in F1. But Fota refused to agree to his conditions, prompting championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action. They announced their decision following a four-hour meeting on Thursday night ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. "Since the formation of Fota last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder (Bernie Ecclestone), to develop and improve the sport," read a Fota statement. "Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community. "Fota is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport. "In particular, the manufacturer teams have provided assistance to the independent teams, a number of which would probably not be in the sport today without the Fota initiatives. "The Fota teams have further agreed upon a substantial voluntary cost reduction that provides a sustainable model for the future. "Following these efforts, all the teams have confirmed to the FIA and the commercial rights holder that they are willing to commit until the end of 2012. The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship Fota statement "The FIA and the commercial rights holder have campaigned to divide Fota. "The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006. "Despite this, and the uncompromising environment, Fota has genuinely sought compromise. "It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship." Fota added that its championship would put F1 fans first and boast the best drivers and sponsors. "This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders," added the statement. "The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series." Former champions Williams and Force India have already committed unconditionally to the FIA's world championship along with three new entrants - Campos, US F1 and Manor. The FIA has said there are other would-be newcomers waiting to take the places of those teams that refused to enter unconditionally, although one, Lola, has already withdrawn its application. The stage is also set for a legal battle, with the FIA saying champions Ferrari and the two Red Bull teams have existing contracts which commit them to the existing championship. The FIA had set a Friday deadline for five teams - Brawn, BMW-Sauber, McLaren, Renault and Toyota - to convert their provisional entries into unconditional ones or risk being excluded. There was no immediate comment from the FIA or Ecclestone. |

Can't we have a sport where if you have the ability to be better, you don't have to dumb yourself down so it can be 'fair' for others. From what I understand, Mosley was pursuing a system in which the teams could either use a lot of engineering and performance enhancers with a capped budget, or be limited to what they could use and how they use it but have no budget cap. (if that makes sense) I believe one number they were kicking around was ~40mil Euros IIRC, which is astonishingly low compared to what they are spending now. Basically creating two tiers of cars in F1, which would be beyond stupid. |

Fuck Bernie Eccelstone!! Its Max Mosely and the FIA that has caused this, but its Bernie that's going to lose hundreds of millions of dollars. And with all the manufacturers leading the break away, FOTA be being the series that gets the race dates at the courses around the world. This is going to be big news on the F1 practice broadcast tomorrow morning. ![]() I do feel bad for the USF1 team effort. Its only through Max's introduction of alternate spec (Cosworth) engines and customer chassis that have enabled the smaller start-up teams to get into the game. |

There were rules, but we saw the advent of active suspensions, anti-lock brakes, traction control, telemetry, fly-by-wire controls, pneumatic valve springs, power steering, semi-automatic transmissions, and NASTY, NASTY fuel. I can remember when they finally cracked down on the brew ELF was running in the Williams FW14-15s. Turns out it provided huge power and quick cases of cancer in lab animals.... I started watching F1 in this era and it has been downhill since. I don't think we will ever see such an explosion of new technology and experimentation. |

This is going to be different from the CART/IRL split in that, in the US, the Indy 500 was the big draw. The name drivers were second and the Teams a distant third. In F1, the Teams (Ferrari especially) are the big draw followed by the Drivers. There's no big stand alone event. The FOTA has all of the Big Name Teams and Big Name Drivers. There are plenty of circuits with F1 history available (Imola, Jerez, Silverstone, Magny Cours, Estoril, Fuji, Montreal, Adelaide even Indy) to hold races. The teams have even said that they could expand to three car operations to fill out grids. They could put on a good show. ETA They could also undercut Mosley/Bernie. Right now, the FIA/FOM take 50% of the Circuit Fees and TV Money and the Teams only see 50%. The Teams could offer the TV Stations and Circuits a much cheaper deal and still end up ahead. |

And just how much fan interest will there be in a bunch of glorified GP2 Cars (branded as 'F1') running at places like Turkey, Bahrain, Red China and Singapore? For many years I refused to watch F1, who I mostly view as a bunch of euro-trash pussies,
that refused to let us yanks come on board, and play in their precious sport. which is true for the most part...
but with people assembling a car in North Carolina that will be a F1 US entry I started checking it out late last season,which was ok but this year has been awesome to watch. lots and lots of great racing, passing, slick tires, technology drama...good stuff. |

Fill me in, why is Bernie so hated? He is Satan incarnate. Bernie's Holding Company for the Commercial Rights to F1 (FOM) takes about 50% right off the top from Circuit Fees and TV Money. Bernie has dumped great races like Montreal, Silverstone, Spa because they won't pay his sky-high fees while he takes F1 into non-historic locations like China and Bahrain simply because they'll pay. Spa only ended up back on the schedule because the Drivers and Fans raised holy-hell over it. Maybe the greatest circuit in Motor Racing. And here's a thought - the FOTA reaches an agreement with LeSarthe to run a GP at the track at LeMans. That would be AWESOME. |

You know the sad thing is that the sport has been working pretty well since the departure of MS. Many thought that was to be the end of F1. They just can't leave well enough alone. Small changes over long periods of time work. Making teams, drivers and venue owner/operators chase their tails every single year is a method which is doomed to failure. I hope that North America gets a date again. And I hope that some other non-Tilke tracks come back to life. The Tilke tracks have become F1's version of the 1.5 mile smooth tri-oval bore-fest of NASCAR. Check out atlasf1.com forums. I warn you, it can get pretty rough in there. They take F1 as seriously as we take the 2nd Amendment. |
