As I'm getting warmed up for this years diving, and plans for getting Rescue Diver certification next month, I wonder where the rest of you are with diving
I'm PADI, OW, AOW and Nitrox certified (and a few oddball "specialities") Deepest: 105 FSW on the Spiegel Grove and Duane in Key Largo for the non-divers, deep isn't where all the action is, that's usually in the shallow waters where the reef's are. (color and life drop off the deeper you go) |
| Have not dove in a couple years, but I am PADI certified, and nearly completed divemaster before I ran out of time for that hobby. Deepest I have been is around 120, would have to get the log out to check. All cold water diving, typically in the 40-45 degree range, I would love to make it down to some warm water and not have to dive in a dry suit, I gave up on the heavy wetsuit, just to cold and uncomfortable. |

PADI, OW, AOW, EANx (Nitrox)
My deepest was 145 in the Coral Sea (I agree with RED_5 that deep isn't that interesting. I actually only intended to go 120 on that dive, but got narked - good thing my dive buddy got my attention)
The more I dive, the more I learn to really take my time on a dive, and slow down and appreciate all the small stuff on a dive, instead of looking for the big fish. Some of my favorite diving has been on the island of Bonaire, where you can shore dive and just take your time (you and your buddy), diving you own plan and schedule. Awesome. (Plus, the island has really good indonesian food ETA: My wife (dive buddy) and I have wanted to do the Rescue Diver certification for a while now, but unfortunately our time (and money) for diving is somewhat reduced these days, so we may not get around to it. |

PADI Open water, Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster, and now Instructor.

TDI Nitrox, Nitrox Gas Blender, soon doing Advanced Nitrox and Deco NACD Cavern, and Intro to Cave, sometime in June to do Apprentice Cave also, manufacturer's certified equipment repair tech. |
I was originally YMCA certified back in '93 or '94, then took the PADI Advanced Open Water program back in '99 or '00. I would have to dig thru my gear bags to find my cards.
I'm a fair-weather diver. The deepest I've been is 130' at Lake Wazee in Black River Falls Wisconsin. Nothing to see there folks, move along. The best spots I've been to were one day stops at Cozumel and Grand Cayman when the wife and I went on a Carribean Cruise several years ago. |
|
I have certifications from multiple agencies. Most of my diving is cave diving and deep wreck but I still teach a lot of openwater and enjoy shallow reefs.
I started diving while with the 534th MP Company while stationed in Panama. NAUI Instructor IANTD Recreational Trimix Instructor TDI Instructor SDI Instructor NACD Full Cave NSS-CDS Full Cave I am hoping to get to Bonaire and Roatan and Tulum or Akumal this year. If anyone wants to get a trip together let me know. |

<––-wannabee diver.
I love snorkeling, and have wanted for several years to get into SCUBA, but 1) it's expensive, and 2) west TN isn't much of a place for diving. I forsee events in the next year or two of my life that would allow me to get into SCUBA, and look forward to it, but, honestly, I could spend days and days snorkeling and not get tired of it or feel the need to get deeper. |

I dive as much as humanly possible. Last year I did 106 dives. I dive year round and love every minute of it. I am OW and Nitrox certified. I live in Pensacola, FL and have 100's of wrecks and reefs to dive. It really is a great place to live if you like to dive. I spearfish mostly. Well, that's all I do really. I can't seem to go down without a gun now. I dive anywhere from 75' to 145'. It's an addiction that I can't control. Just ask my wife. I do own my own boat and get out as much as I can.
I just love to eat fish. I am a topside fisherman turned spearfisherman. It's so much easier to go down and simply have my pick instead of sitting topside hoping that something will bite. Quoted:

There is so much that you are missing down below. But I see your point about living in TN. I got into diving so that I could spearfish. It's like hunting, just underwater and you almost always get a kill. |
| NASDS back in the 70's, kinda got out of it. Then my son got interested so I went thru the PADI course with him. We went on an one week dive trip to Bay Island Beach Resort on the island of Roaatan. It was just great, dove to 110ft a couple of times. Night dive, wreck dive. Just an awsome thing to do with my son. |

NAUI Open Water ETA: Somebody wanna tell me the main difference between NAUI and PADI? I've heard NAUI was more through, but that may have just been my NAUI instructor's bias... Just depends on who you talk to really. PADI has a lot more certification types vs. NAUI. If you look at the course curriculum, PADI has all kinds of levels of certs etc... With NAUI it's more of a simple flow chart of levels of certification. PADI has a lot of money and hoopla that is related to the PADI name. But other than a few minor differences in theory, there is not much difference at all. |

Over here, my impression is that PADI instructors tends to be more of the minimalistic on the skills thought while NAUI instructors tend to discipline and harden you more so that you will be able to take care of yourself. For kicks, I joined a NAUI Master certification class that was on the resort one day... swam with them when they had a 1Km open water swim. I dont know if PADI has that. |

Brown Water Diver checking in (Lake Travis, TX).. PADI OW,AOW
My deepest was Punta Del Sur in Cozamel, 128'. My dive computer freaked me out when I read 3 minutes of air left ( at depth ). I think I may have been slightly narc given my (emotional) reaction and near abandonment of the dive plan. I fought through it but came too close to making a bolt to the surface for comfort. My favorite dives are in the 20 to 90' range. I've taken a Nitrox class but to be honest the instruction was not the best and I will not claim that cert until I've retaken the material with someone more.. reputable. I enjoy night dives, even in Lake Travis. Since the kids, my wife and I haven't been able to dive at all. |

PADI Divemaster 1995. Have since stopped paying renewal fee so technically I guess I'm a rescue diver. Certified through MDA in Guam. Haven't been under water for a long time now. I miss it quite a bit.
Have done many dives to 130'. Best that I can recall was a night dive to 130' without lights at Blue Hole on Guam. Moon was so bright and water was so clear that we had our lights off for most of the dive. I've done Yap and Palau also. Blue Corner in Palau is out of this world!!! |
|
I'm SSI, OW, AOW. My deepest dive was 120', I was shooting for 130' but the bottom was being selfish and would not get out of the way[>://. I do a lot of river diving, and also try to get to the coast as much as possible. the coolest dive so far was in Florida, I was looking for a dive buddy at a rental shop and met a guy who was getting his tanks filled. Turned out he was a Marine Biologist and let me dive with him at the Miami Seaquarium to clean the algee off the viewing windows |

NAUI Open Water ETA: Somebody wanna tell me the main difference between NAUI and PADI? I've heard NAUI was more thorough, but that may have just been my NAUI instructor's bias... Have taken both, and NAUI was more about the 'why'. I took padi with the wife and it was less technical. Like 'do your dive chart like this or you could be harmed' Naui would explain why, the physiological effects and what would happen ifyou didn't. I have a much better understanding of what is happening on a dive Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Originally got my cert thorugh NASDS, but about 12 years ago I went back and started over with PADI: AOW, and a long list of specialties.
I've been tagged at work to be part of a dive recovery team attached to our fire dept. in case someone drives their truck into one of our holding ponds (I work at a mine). They are going to pony up for almost $10K for top shelf dive gear for me (dry suit, helmet, u/w comms, etc), and I'm trying to convince management that the recovery team needs to go to Seychelles or Mauritius for equipment familiarzation dives.... Favorite place to dive (so far) has been Cozumel. I love drift diving. |
