At least she didn't take it to jiffy lube.
I rode along with a friend who was getting her oil changed there (despite my advice against). I laughed when the guy told her that the strongly recommend the transmission fluid be flushed every 7.5K miles. I laughed harder when she went to pay and they tacked on an extra $4 to the bill because it took "5 and a one fourth quarts of oil". I said "so you squeeze in an extra cup of oil to her 5 quart engine and make yourself an extra $4? Nice scam". I was going to continue arguing but she shot me a look that let me know I should just shut up. |
You maybe got taken for a couple hundred, maybe, if you had taken it somewhere else. Then again maybe not. Look on the bright side, at least this way there is no question you had your maintenance done when your tranny goes out and they don't want to cover it under warranty because you did it yourself and can't find the receipts.
Brother in law did all his own maintenance on a Ford escort. When the motor blew, they would not cover it under warranty because he could not come up with receipts for his oil changes and other maintenance. Cost him $2,500. Talk about pissed. You definitely got GANKED over the cost of doing it yourself. But if you don't have the know how/tools/time to do it yourself anyway.... I did that kind of stuff myself for years. Finally got tired of it and take it in now. I've replaced more waterpumps, alternators, brake pads/shoes, spark plugs, fuel filters, etc. than I can count. But they've made it such a damn hassle now days to pull anything without removing half the engine, I no longer care to and pay the rape charges. The key is to find a good trustworthy mechanic that you know personally to do the work who won't screw you. Good luck finding that now days! ETA: from the looks of your pics, I bet just getting to those plugs would be a chore. Then, when you break one off in the block because of thte angle and crap in the way, you're really screwed. Ask me how I know. It's easy to turn a $30 job into a $250 job. |

Spark plugs run $1.50 on average and a PCV Valve is $4 and some carb cleaner maybe $6...okay, so you couldve done it yourself for $36... Fluids for transmission and differential to both flush and refill them isn't exactly cheap. Probably sold him the expensive spark plugs, labor, etc. |

Did they put in new saturn rings and blinker fluid too? The RT Chargers no longer use headlight fluid, they run off a small generator attached to the flux capacitor, it's "Green" energy if you will. I would be curious to know if they did charge the OP for changing out the muffler bearings, which Dodge suggest doing every 71.7 miles. |

I have read about shit like this on a charger forum and always wondered if my stealership would bring it up to me

What's the dealy with the Ace of Spades emblem? |
| Plugs every 25k isn't a bad idea if you want to maintain the horsepower you paid more money for. Throttle body cleaning is too easy not to do when you are changing plugs. Transmissions, differentials, or even your engine often lose some material at the surfaces where metal parts interact during the initial "break in" process. Changing fluids AND FILTERS after this initial break in, while not absolutely necessary, is definitely not a bad thing in a performance application. |
| You know you CAN pick and choose the type of work/maintanence done on your car. You forgot to mention the oil change, was it synthetic???, and the tire balance/rotation as well. What about the air filter and/or cabin filter, fuel filter(or are those in the tank now????). |

................. (if they actually did it) .................. A friend of mine took his Blazer to the chevy dealer about 10 years ago, it was running rough. When he got the bill it was $500+ and included new plugs, air filter and oil change. It was still running rough so we pulled it in the garage at work. It had the original plugs in it and they were toast, the air filter was plugged and the oil looked like it hadn't been changed in 10k miles. |

I take care of the air filter, its a dub cold air intake set up with a K&N type filter, just take it off and clean it every 5k-8k miles. They just changed the oil last week, thats when she set the appointment for the 30k service.... Didn't rotate the tires because I'm needing to buy new ones in about a month |

Couldve been done yourself for about $30... I love computer and automotive advice threads! It might help if we knew WTF kind of car you have!
Spark plugs run $1.50 on average and a PCV Valve is $4 and some carb cleaner maybe $6...okay, so you couldve done it yourself for $36... Would a real mechanic please jump in here and tell us exactly whats involved here as far as labor? I'm certainly not going to remove an intake manifold or loosen motor mounts and jack up an engine to change plugs for $36!

Probably sold him the expensive spark plugs, labor, etc. Well, if it's an auto then you buy X quarts of ATF4 or whatever is specified for trans. I buy the "expensive" sythentic and its about $6 a quart. My trans (6 speed manual) takes just over 2 quarts. The diffs, depending on size will take somewhere between 1 and 3 quarts of oil ranging from $4-$7 a quart depending on weight/syth/etc. |

Quoted: I did virtually the same thing this winter for the FJ Cruiser. I think I may have spent closer to $170. The stealership would have charged me something like $650.Quoted: Not to piss in your frosted flakes, but I changed 6 spark plugs, engine oil/filter, changed front and rear diff fluids, transmission fluid, and transfer case fluid in my Jeep along with and oil/filter change for the wifes car for under $250. |
