I'm looking for the estimated total number of guns in America right now. Registered or estimated unregistered.
I saw about 4.5 million are purchased every year from the NRA. How many are out there? |

If you want an accurate figure (for a project or something), I'd email BATFE and the NRA, asking for their latest predictions. |

Registered? ![]() Background checks = registered in my opinion. There is a record of them somewhere for the government. I think that's part of the problem. Counting NICS checks only counts the transfer, so one gun could account for many transfers over the years. I am actually interested in the answer, if you find it. |

And on the other side, most states allow those with CCW's to bypass the background check. I would imagine that, statistically, those with CCW tend to buy more firearms than the average gun owner. |

Man, current stats are hard to come by.
Lots of stats from the late 1990s. That NRA article states that the number is "at an all time high," but that will always be the case, unless they are destroyed at a faster rate than new sales. eta: I tried searching DOJ, BATF and FBI, and could find nothing, even when including the word "estimated" in my search. Then I realized that I'm kinda glad that the number is unknown. |

I think the DOJ did a '97 survey and figured 75,000,000 gun owners by their account in America. A few years back, the non-DOJ number was 93,000,000 and 250,000,000 guns, 1/4 of all privately held firearms on the planet. With BHO and a few more years under our belts, it's gotta be higher. Over the years I have asked this question on many forums. I quit doing so as the answer as a single solid number does not appear to be out there.
The low number I have seen is 75 million and the high number I have seen is 800 million. Neither is probably accurate but I hope it is the higher one. |

The "Small Arms Survey" estimates from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva are commonly used in firearms research (US totals between 238 and 276 million in 2003) - another 4-5 million a year since then. Since they estimated the totals in different nations you can do some comparisons (but nobody knows the true rate - the 276 probably under counts - there are plenty of 100 year old guns in circulation that are still serviceable). Here is a link: http://www.smallarmssurvey.org/files/sas/publications/year_b_pdf/2003/2003SASCh2_full_en.pdf Warning - Their politics are very "liberal" - (guns in private hands are bad). |

U.S. most armed country with 90 guns per 100 people
Source: Reuters Tue Aug 28, 2007 1:25pm ET140 By Laura MacInnis GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said. U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies. About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said. "There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said. India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people. Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals. On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38. France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people. "Firearms are very unevenly distributed around the world. The image we have of certain regions such as Africa or Latin America being awash with weapons –– these images are certainly misleading," Small Arms Survey director Keith Krause said. "Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income," he told a Geneva news conference. The report, which relied on government data, surveys and media reports to estimate the size of world arsenals, estimated there were 650 million civilian firearms worldwide, and 225 million held by law enforcement and military forces. Five years ago, the Small Arms Survey had estimated there were a total of just 640 million firearms globally. "Civilian holdings of weapons worldwide are much larger than we previously believed," Krause said, attributing the increase largely to better research and more data on weapon distribution networks. Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities. |

Just a thought: Does anyone think that with enough time the number of guns owned by the citizens will out number those owned by police/military? my guess - it already does - some quick math Military is only 2 million - thats not even 1% of the population of the US - even if Soldiers/Sailor/Airmen/Marines were each carrying 3 weapons = 6 million weapons - not even a drop in the bucket Civilian Police (using NYC averages) roughly 50,000 oficers for a population of roughly (estimates as exact number is unknown) 8.5 million - (ie 1 officer per 170 people) US population of 300,000,000/ 170 = 1,764,706 (rounded) or 1.8 million police officers with each carrying 3 weapons = 5.3 million weapons (rounded) under 12 million weapons for military and police - compared to mid-200 million (estimated) weapons for civilians someone check my math - but i think civilians already have more weapons than Military and civilian police agiencies |

There must be a huge amount of slackers out there because the average AR15.com member has about 12-15 from what I can gather.
