So recently, my wife and I decided to buy a guns safe to store all my guns. Reason being, we live in a shitty neighborhood, with many vehicle break-ins and didn't want our jewelery and weapons stolen. So they sit in there all day, I figured someone will be more likely to break in while I am at work and steal my shit than when I am at home. But it put me in a real dilemma. The reason I have guns is for self defense, What good are they locked up? I thought maybe I can just get good at opening a safe real fast. But that's not going to work, opening a combo lock in the middle of the night is near impossible, let alone doing it under pressure. So my question is how do you keep safe the things that keep you safe, while still having easy access to them. Should I get a keypad lock, can I get a fingerprint sensor lock? I was even thinking, do the combo until I am about 5 clicks away, if shit goes down I can just do a quick turn and pull her open. But then was worried a criminal might know to check that. Just seems silly locking up the very thing that keeps me safe, but at the same time, someone can just as easily swipe my guns and use them against me or someone else if they are not locked up. Here in California, that makes you the criminal. thanks for any suggestions.

This should have been included with your first gun purchase

To answer your question, keep a gun or two close by at night, then lock them up when you're not there.

When you get home, pull out what you want to defend yourself and lock it up when you leave. Do you have a ccw?

They make quick-access vaults - GunVault and MiniVault come to mind.  I have three quick-access safes in the three areas of the house that I spend the most time.  Accessible and secure.

If you dont have one already just go buy a remington 870 Home Defense model 12gauge it has an 18 inch barrel and a 7 shot mag.  I bought one a few months back for 275.00 brand new.  You could probably get a good used one for a lil over 150.00.  Anyway keep that by your bedside when you are home and lock it up when you are gone.  Worst case scenario is you forget to lock it up and a thug steals your 200.00 gun.  the same could be said for your favorite defense pistol or AR but i like to keep my remmy out cause it costs signifigantly less than my other prized weapons and is much easier to replace than a new AR or pistol.  Plus IMHO a 12 gauge defense shotty is the best home defense weapon you can find.  Another option is to buy a small fingerprint or keypad activated pistol safe that mounts to your bed frame.  They open very quickly and are very safe for someone with children in the home.  Only downside to this is it usually doesnt take much to rip the off of whatever you have it mounted to.  Hope this helps.

No CCW, live in California and you pretty much need to be a LEO or have a friend that is a LEO. We can open carry unloaded, but your better off carrying a knife or hammer in that case :-P I guess it makes sense to pull out the one I will use for self defense if need be. Guess that would be the trusty Mossberg 12 gauge :D

I leave a handgun laying on top of my safe when I'm at home. When I leave I strap it on my hip.
