I'm ready to move up to the bigboy range and start shooting 500yds+.
Got the Savage 10FP 24" , mounts, Burris Signature Rings......but no scope for it.

Background: I normally shoot open or iron sights. I've only recently started dabbling in scopes...Burris Fullfield II 3-9x on the .17 HMR . It does very well for that rifle; got it cheap

Trying to read up on scopes ....so many choices, so many opinions...gets mindboggling.

I like the TMR, MP-8 and plain Mil-Dot  reticles,

TMR

MP-8

But , I'm thinkin' these above only come on the high-end price scopes. So, looks like I'll be stuck with mil-dot for now.

Working Price range: $350-400
Yes, I know the glass afficienados are gonna be bitchin' cause I'm not putting the Hubble Telescope on my rifle.......ain't gonna happen, sorry.
But...I am willing to bite the bullet and go higher if you can give me a VERY good reason to do so.

Here's one I'm looking at for starters:
Bushnell Elite 3200 Riflescope 7-21x40AO Mil Dot

I am not a big scope guy, but picked up a decent Burris recently and damn was I surprised at how good the glass was.  I was very impressed with the clarity, etc.  I will probably go that direction next time as well.

this is the one:

see if anyone you know has the scopes you're interested in. Offer to pay for (or supply) ammo so you can try them out; obviously, this won't be on your gun, but it will let you try the reticules and see the clarity, etc etc.

In my experience, at 500 plus yards, magnification won't be all that important as the higher you turn it, the worse the mirage becomes.

Buy the best glass you can afford, don't worry so much about buying a higher magnification scope and buy a good brand like Nikon, Leupold or the Bushnell.

one thing I like about the TMR is that the center is open.  if your target has color, you can see it & know that you're on it

I did get to see a Shepard scope this weekend. Was very clear . I had the "wants" for one a while back but after looking thru it , I don't see much advantage over my Burris  other than the one-shot zero deal.

Some of the Burris gear I've seen and purchased lately is just amazingly good.

I can't leave Burris out of the game anymore...

If i were you i would purchase the best scope i could for the money.
I have a Leupold mark 4 10x and am still not happy with the quality after playing with a S&B PM2.
