Yes.

The difference between knowing, and doing.  Very fundamental, and many of our laws allow one but not the other.

So if you know what you know, and know what you don't know, then how do you know if what you do know is enough to make you smart, or are just stuck with knowing that you are wise? Or if you know what you don't know and you don't try to know these things, doesn't that mean that you should know your a dumbass?

I concur.

Some of the most intelligent people I have ever met, have been those that are willing to simply say "I don't know."

Intelligence is (among other things) the ability to memorize information, perform calculations in your mind without losing track, hold long-term stored memory...

Wisdom is (among other things) the ability to find the correct judgement in any given situation, to be aware of your surroundings and take in all available sources of information...

Reminds me of a family I know.  The mom and her daughters are able to ace tests with hardly a moment of study.  Brilliant intellects.  On the other hand, they don't have the common sense necessary to change the oil in their car or even fill it with gas until it runs dry on them.

Some of the wisest people I've ever known, when asked a question they did not have an answer to, would tell you right up front they didn't know. Then they would go find the answer. I've meet a far number of smart people who had a answer for everything.

I can get behind that.  Just hit yourself with some long-duration cryo and you're effectively insulated from fire as well (obviously not magical fire, thogh).

Unless that book is a technical manual. I've seen too many engines messed up by a mechanic, usually well scarred, who refused to read.

I double dog dare you to change the timing belt on a 1998-2003 VW TDI (ALH) without the manual. And even WITH the manual, there are new bolts with different torque...like the IP sprocket to hub bolts...green, 15 foot-pounds plus 1/4 turn. Engine mount bolts (green, 44 foot pounds, then 1/4 turn, grey, 74 foot pounds only).  And those engine mount bolt holes?  Better repair the threads with Helicoils, M12-1.5 because the aluminum will strip after the second removal.

Understood.  I didn't say to throw out the books.

A person who has read and nearly memorized the technical manual has achieved one level of understanding.  He is smart.

A person who has read the manual and actually changed a timing belt has gained a more complete level of understanding.  He is wise.

And I think you'll agree that sometimes, even when following the manual to a "T", you'll bust a knuckle changing a timing belt.

Knowledge is having absorbed facts.

Smart is knowing what those facts mean.

Wise is knowing how to apply those understood facts for the best outcome.

Pretty good. I think of intelligence as horsepower, and wisdom as knowing how to drive it.

Or, another spin on what you said by an astrophysicist friend of mine: "When I graduated with my B.S., I realized I didn't know anything. When I got my PhD, I realized no one else did either."

I have always explained it to students like so:

INTELLIGENCE:  it is raining.  Rain is formed when the sun heats the earth's large bodies of water causing it to evaporate and form as clouds that...

WISDOM:  it is raining.  I'd better get inside and out of the rain.
