I currently have very little understanding of the various prevailing semi-auto operating systems (pistol and rifle).  I'd like to better understand the variety and genesis of the most popular semi-auto operating systems. What books would you recommend?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Small Arms Handbooks from Brassey's are a very good source of fundamental knowledge on operating systems. Amazon has some available copies. In general, most operating systems of automatic weapons can be described by the following diagram (taken from the book 'handbook on weaponry').

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Handguns by A.B. Zhuk.  Has simplified drawings of the different types of operating methods (i.e. Short recoil, long recoil, blowback, toggle, etc.)  Makes it pretty easy to understand.
