Depends on the instructor, and on how hard you push yourself. I used to be a regular at one with a real DI of an instructor. Took a couple friends who were serious mountain bikers once, and it wiped 'em out pretty well. |

Say an 8 on a 1-10 scale. They, for all intents, kicked our collective ass. To answer the OP's question, yes you will die a sweaty painful death. Good luck. |
| I have just started going with the wife, have only been to 2 of them Wednesday for an hour. It is very hard if you push yourself your HR will be maxed out and you will be gasping for air. Also your calves will cramp. Other than that it is fun. Serioulsy it is a great cardio workout and you are not gay if you do it. |

Im back, all of the bikes faced towards one another with the instructor in the middle and it was a dude.
there was one cute girl in the entire class, but she was sitting right next to this fat girl who kept making i want you faces at me so i stopped looking over there. |

How does one take a class to ride a stationary bike?
How much will spinning boast one's running ability out of curiosity? iv always thought bike riding was a great way to improve you run times, for me it always helped strengthen my tendons and muscles without the repeated bang bang stress of running. for me i might not be able to run hard for more than 20 mins but i sure as hell kick my own ass for over an hour on a bike. |

Find a new class, that one's a loser. Unless you feel like a charity case and could stand to talk to the fat girl...

If you plan on doing it more in the future, get the shoes that clip on the pedals.
They are fun as long as you have a good instructor that pics kick ass music. You will be tired. Wear HR monitor, you may burn over 800 calories in an hour. (And not look like your avg Arfcommer )

I mean dont we all want to look like someone who looks qualified to run an ebr as opposed to just looks like he was qualified to do so? |

I don't know what a Spin Class is, but if you're just getting back into it, take it easy.
Most people that come into the gym for the first time or after an extended absence hit it way too hard the first few times. They end up burning out before they get any real benefit. That said, best of luck. Nothing lifts the spirits like exercise |

uh yeah thats exactly it |

so im getting back in shape, i used to be a big bike rider so i decided to take a spin class at the YMCA. so i guess what im asking is, am i gonna die? Yes. 1hr spinning ~= 5 mile run.... Unless you slack off... Spinning is part of the PT program at my current unit (lots of hurt folks = 'alternative' ways to work out)... It is by no means 'easy' or 'a girl thing'.... 2sec jumps = ARRRGHHH (Up 2 sec, down 2sec - repeat... While pedaling against resistance (Brakes)).... Unless of course, you puss out & just sit there pedaling with no resistance.... |

Did "it" move? "that rule only applies by contact" - or something to that affect, long time since I've seen that episode, but it was lol funny. George is a riot. |

You get teh aids yet? J/k... biking is one hell of a workout if done right. You got your heart-rate monitor and all setup for the class? no just 2 fingers on the neck iv gotten pretty good at keeping track of it. i tended to stay in the 170 range the whole time so pretty good id say |

How much will spinning boast one's running ability out of curiosity? Spin class is to stationary bike riding, what in-formation PT is to calisthenics.... The leader/instructor directs the workout, and has you perform various activities with the bike.... Such as simulating pedaling uphill (progressively increasing resistance every X seconds)... Or doing 'Jumps' (ride x seconds seated, then x seconds standing, then seated - usually in the 2-4sec range) Or 'Sprints' (add a fixed resistance level and pedal at max effort for X seconds).... It is very good cardio and YES, it should do VERY well for your running abilities - works the same muscles WITHOUT hammering the fuck out of your feet/ankles... |
