I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled out 48 hours ago, (the number 1 tooth is what the doc called it) I have two questions.

1. For those who dip or smoke how long was it till you could dip/smoke again?  I've been told anywhere from 3-5 days, so i thought I'd ask the hive mind.

2. How long after the tooth is pulled can you stop packing gauze in your mouth.

For dip/smoke, I'd wait a while just to be safe.  A good week or more (hard as that may be).

Wait a few days, and take the gauze out.  It'll bleed for some time, and be susceptible for infection for even longer.  I'd say that 3-5 days is good.

So...your dentist/oral surgeon gave no instructions?

He gave some instructions, but to be honest its all kind of hazy, lots of Novicane in me at the time, and I had only slept for 4 hours in the last 48 hour period.

I've asked our medic, and thats about the same as he said.  It just sucks, going cold turkey from a 1.5 tin a day habit sucks bad, and its no fun for those near me.

I'd avoid tabacco for a few more days if you can, at least the dip. You have some pretty deep holes in your gums right now. You can probably take the cotton out, assuming the bleeding has stopped. Just so you know, the pain reaches its worst 4 or 5 days after. Keep those pills close by.

If you kick the habit for a week (which you should after oral surgery), you should walk the fuck away from it forever.

The bleeding will stop in a few days.  I found ibuprofen helped a lot for the pain, better than tylenol or even the T3's they gave me.

It's almost kind of a shame that they didn't yank 'em all.  If you have problems with the other three in the future you've gotta go through all this bullshit again

Yeah, there's a bit of a delay in the pain and swelling, couldn't tell you why. I had all of mine out on a friday. Felt okay that weekend, was evening doing yard work. Then the swelling starts. By the following wednesday, my head was so swollen my right eye was nearly swelled shut. I spent about 12 days eating nothing but milkshakes and baby food, dropped about 8 pounds. I had all 4 teeth removed at once, so maybe my case was a little worse than normal, I hope you don't reach the point where you're ripping pilows in half. Definitely get the strongest pain meds they'll give you and enjoy them.

I had all four pulled at once about three years ago, went home and smoked all I liked.

My dentist was a reformed smoker but he wasn't a dick like most former smokers. He told me it was the suction that I should I avoid because it might open up the healing wounds. So go easy and enjoy a cigarette but avoid using a straw for a few days.

Do 100% what your dental surgeon told you. Dry socket is a massive do. not. want.
I found the pain pills helpful with nicotine cravings but I don't smoke a lot.

eta- who was with you to take you home? They might be helpful in remembering the instructions and they should have given written material.
I don't remember leaving the office at all or most of the day and into the next. The SO says I was quite amusing.

From what I understand, it's the suction action caused by smoking that's the problem.

And let me tell you, dry sockets are the LAST thing you want happening.  You will want to KILL SOMEONE to get that to go away.

I know, I thought the same thing, but I can't be out of work for the time it would take to recover, I have R&R Leave in a little over a week, and I'm training my replacement.  Just a generally bad time to be on quarters.  This one caught me by surprise, woke up one day and it hurt like a SOB, All my past dentists had said my wisdom teeth were fine, i guess this one tooth got screwed up, and it needed to come out.

I may or may not kick the dip, we'll see.  A combat deployment is the last place in the world I want to quit dipping.  That stuff keeps me awake and on my game.

Me was with me, I walked to the clinic (about 1 mile away) and than walked back after I was done. Crashed and then went to work that night.  I work the graveyard shift.

Had both right side wisdom teeth pulled at sea while in the Corps.
Doctor said "NO STRAWS" and no sodas.
He didnt want me to mess up the plug in my jaw.
It took months for the holes to fill in.

when i had my 4 wisdoms pulled at once i was smoking. i was really aware of the issues with a dry socket and didnt want one, but i  still smoked.  i just took real light drags, everything was fine.  now i dip.  i wouldnt dip if i were you.

get the pouches and jam one of em between your big toe and the second toe and put on a sock.  it will ease the cravings and is the ultimate toe jam.

I don't recommend you do this, but I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at one time. An hour later I had my cotton out, was eating pizza and chewing my Red Seal.

This....

You think you're in pain now. If you get dry socket you better haul ass back to the dentist to get it taken care of!!!

I smoked a couple of hours after having both (my two remaining lowers) extracted.  I did not get dry socket until a week AFTER the surgery, and then in just one of the cavities.  It hurt like hell until I put some eugenol on it (clove oil).  That took care of the pain.  The smell and taste of death was in my mouth for another week after that.

Some people are more susceptible to dry sockets than others. I didnt worry about it when the bleeding stopped since I figured they clotted. Just dont suck the clots loose and get a dry socket, my dentist recommended dipping if I had to do anything.

By the way, had an extraction Thursday for an "extra" tooth. Dried up in an hour, no pain meds needed until I tried to eat a Slim Jim Friday afternoon. Make sure you carry Ambesol and your prescribed meds with you for atleast a week.

Ive been sucking on the Loracets since Friday now, didnt want to but man Im sore. Now I need a stool softener.
