For raising your metabolism, increasing fat loss and getting in better aerobic shape, which is bette: low intensity distance jogging or hard sprinting for short distances?

What distances for each one?

I figure both can assist a person but it seems one would be more beneficial

I've read that low intensity stuff ups your metabolism while you do the exercise, but it tapers back to where it was before you exercised, and that high intensity short duration work (sprints) keep your metabolism higher all day.

running intervals (sprint for a while then walk) really helps to condition your heart from what I've been told....though you want only do that once or twice a week, the rest of the time running for distance at a predetermined pace is good.  I know I can run at 8min pace for 1.5mi before my shins start being a bitch and cause me to stop even though the rest of me wants to keep going
