Quoted: There are purpose made tubes now. Go to the survival forum and ask. On the same note. Has anyone actually been downtown in a major city and seen the fall out shelter signs? Has any one been in one of those places? I live near Houston.... (Technically in it... in the suburbs of Houston) I have never seen one when I was downtown.... Nor have I seen one in my area. Never been in one. The tube shelters look small and uncomfortable. |

On the same note. Has anyone actually been downtown in a major city and seen the fall out shelter signs? Has any one been in one of those places? There is one about a block from my house, never been in it though. By the look of the sign its been there for quite awhile... |
| Ive been in several in Tennessee (Nashville) all of them have been vacant basements and subbasements in old ass building, a few had some cool water barrels and misc. junk with the CD emblem on it. None of the ones Ive been in have been stocked or anything since the 50's I guess. |

Quoted: Quoted: Supposedly, they still exist in my area.... I wonder if they let you look inside? Maintained shelters or just leftovers from the cold war? Leftovers. The budget for Civil Defense was on the decline since the late 60's (and MAD) and was pretty much done by the 80's. A fellow ARFOMmer discovered a shelter in the (previously unknown) sub-basement of his apartment building just off the square in Madison WI and showed me around when I visited one time. Unfortunately, all the Radiacs, survival rations and crates of cosmolined M1 Garands and ammo that we all fantasize about Just a few empty fiberboard tins. |

There is a huge one (700+ people) north of town built by one of Madam Chiang Kai-shek's nephews who was some sort of oil guy. It is now used as a giant underground datacenter. Here is an article that mentions Continental moving into it. I used to see signs in downtown Chicago, as well, but never ventured to see what was in them. |
