I got a call from a woman who said that my vehicle’s warranty was about to run out blah blah blah and then asked for my car’s make, model, and plate number.  When I asked to which vehicle was she referring she hung up on me.  When I called the number back it said it wasn’t a working number or something like that.  I tried calling a couple more times and got the same result.

Pretty fucking fishy.

That is a telemarketing scam, I get calls from them a couple of times a week on my work phone, it is annoying as hell. They are not calling from the number showing up on the caller ID, the trunks they are calling you from are out dial only anyway, so if you had the correct ANI information you couldn't call them back anyhow.

I find it funny, I drive a 2006 Ford E250 that belongs to a cable company, it has about 60K miles, what kind of idiot would offer to sell a warranty for that POS? As for my personal vehicles, I have a couple of Neons, the baby of them is a 98 with 125K miles and a 2002 Kia Minivan with 90K miles, any warranty offered on any of those vehicles is a scam.

they keep calling me about my 2004 pickup, and each time they say it will be my last chance.

And don't you keep praying they'll make good on the "promise?"

She knows your warranty's going to run out but doesn't know what you drive yeah... makes perfect sense.

They used to call me about my company work van, 165,000 miles and 10 years old with a million hours of idle time to boot. Only real issue I had with it tho was it would eat fuel pumps about every 20 K as the company was to cheap to spring for anything other then the cheapest they could find.

I was getting them about once a day... then I decided to get mine.  I'd hit the key to be transfered to a live person and then I'd blow a fucking whistle as loud as possible into the phone.  I haven't gotten any more of those calls in months.

Big scam and very annoying.  They called the fire station and one day we picked up.  When they started the pitch we said what do you have for a 98 Pierce Fire Engine.  They said it wasn't on their list.  I confused my warranty is running out and they don't even know anything about the vehicle we have?

Got one of those the other day. What's their angle?

this warranty thing is all over. you get the number .. google it. at least one number is from a disconnected phone.. ie they are spoofing the number. there is another number, that starts with 866... cant remember the rest.. you call back you get 'no one is available to take your call, call back at normal hours' and loud music. i filed a complaint with do-no-call.gov about that one.

this extended warranty thing is prolific.. everyone is getting called.. and they are calling folks cellphone numbers over and over..

me .. i'd like to find out who/where they are and ... <COC viloation>

A buddy once told me what worked for him:

You start asking the person personal sexual questions like if it is a woman you ask her if she has large breast. You stay calm and say you are curious about something, and then you start with the weird questions. It usually freaks them out enough that they do not call back.

I get the same calls to my work cell phone, a recording says " this is the seccond notice that ....................."  The funny this is that is comes from different numbers and area codes.  I'm tempted to actually wait for a person and bait them.  Any ideas?

We get calls all the time from them, too.  I work for a major cell service provider, and I can tell you that our head guys know about these idiots.

Wouldn't work, they would just hang up, and your number would get dialed by the computer the next go round, and your call would go to the first randomly available $8.50 an hour marketer. I can't imagine how bad your life would have to suck to take that job.

The calls that the OP is referring to (at least the ones I've gotten) are all automated, including the "rep" on the other end, so yes, none of that would work.  I've just started screening calls.  Sucks, too on a work phone because half of the phone calls I get are from NOCs whose numbers I don't have since they're off somewhere in BFE networking.

I get one of these at least once a day.  It used to piss me off, but now I have fun with it.  When they ask the year and model, I tell them it's a 77 Impala.  They tell me that year is too old and I start arguing with them becase they called me.  You can hear their brain screaming, DISENGAGE, DISENGAGE!!!!!!  Then they just hang up, and I wait for the next one.  Immature, I know, but it makes me feel better.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I tried to call them back after they hung up on me while telling them to FOAD, non working number. I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 with 97,000 on the clock. Good news is they did quit calling after that. All the calls were on my cell phone too.

Good question.  Why that is, I don't know.  The only thing that I can do in my department is report the numbers.  I would also assume from a provider standpoint, is that they can be reported to the FCC, but we can't do anything more to punish them beyond that since none of the numbers that have called here so far have been ours.  I've done research on all these numbers myself and they're very hard to track down.  Numbers can't be dialed back.  Put them into Google and you get sent to these customer complaint websites.  I've filled out FCC forms for some of the numbers as well.
