Cliff Notes:

Ford Motor Co. offering payment protection plan to help reassure consumers who may be putting off buying a new car because of worries about losing their job.

Ford said Tuesday it will cover payments of up to $700 each month for up to a year on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if consumers lose their jobs. The program runs until June 1.

Customers must qualify for state unemployment to be eligible for the program.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford is also offering zero percent financing on certain Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

Ford has not requested federal bailout funds.

Ford also said it would partner with its dealers to introduce a program that would help local charities affected by the economic downturn.

Hours later, GM said it will make a similar offer.

I wish I could afford to support a decent company like Ford.  Unfortunately, I have no more financial strength right now.  I believe the Ford execs are good chess players.  They saw that Obama was thinking three moves ahead when he offered(coerced) the banks and auto industry bail out money.  Take the money and we will take you over and tell everyone that we have no interest in running businesses.

My understanding is that Ford has a better or less beneficial contract with the UAW as compared to GM & Chrysler.  I still dont like the idea of supporting the very people who helped elect the socialist regime that we have.   Ford not taking bailout money was smart.

I had some investments tied to FMC a few years ago ... I have to say, they wisely saw this train coming a few years ago, and started restructuring their business way before Obama came along; the coincidence is fortuitous, though.  I think a lot of these corporate types are beginning to see that .gov involvement in private business = MASSIVE FAIL.  Government Motors (GM) will probably be chopped up, and forced to make Soviet-Bloc style autos (anyone remember the "Yugo"?) "for the people of the Republic"... Ford should prosper if the .gov doesn't go in there and force them to be less competitive to make things "fair."

I wonder if Gillette is going to sue Ford for trade dress issues.

I suspect my next car will be a Ford.  My last purchase was a Suburban, but the way GM spread its legs for Obama leaves me disinclined to like them much.

Ford will tell the Government to Fuck off, I am quite sure, and that will leave the Gov. in a pickle. They have three options none of which are good for them.

1. Let Ford go - Smartest Option, might look bad in the short run, but people will forget.

2. Take them over completely. This lets the people know that the Gov. has truely become socialist. Can't Hide it.

3. Choke them slowly. With this Ford would kick and scream the whole way, make a huge fight out of it, and could possibly survive if Obama is voted out or Congress turns over
