Also posted in HOH, but figured I would get more responses here.

I've been contemplating joining an armed forces. I currently have over 45 college credits and will be graduating with my AA degree next year. I want to get my bachelors and masters degrees paid for. I can make that happen through the army but I have to join go through basic and ait, while having college first option. Attend college for two years to get my bachelors paid for, tuition anyways, by being in the national guard. After finishing my undergraduate program, I would contract with the ROTC and have my masters paid for. I've been thinking about going into the coast guard or cg reserve. The educational benefits aren't all that great compared. If I was to go the cg route, could I get money for my masters and bachelors degrees atleast up to the 4500 fta limit. If I was to go through cg reserve, while in my bachelors program could I contract into the ROTC and get my masters paid for? Also if I was to go through the NG and become an officer. If I was to transfer into the CG, would I have the rank of a 2lt, or whatever an entry officer would be?

If I had it to do over with, I would have went CG.

I was a 12 B, Army.

If you go NG you will NOT be able to transfer.  I know it can happen, but it wont.

I tried every way under the sun to transfer to an Air Gaurd SF unit and was never able to do so, even though I was a sworn civilian police officer and had my degree in law enforcment.

Stick with your gut and go CG.

My cousin has been pushing to get in the CG. Got laid off with Santa Fe railroad and was going to pursue military. Wanted coast guard but they wouldn't accept him because he has tatoos on his arms. Neither will air force. Seems silly, there non offensive and non gang related, but they wont take him. Good kid too, smart clean record, great heart. CG is really missing out this pick.

USCG here.

I love the CG its a great job, My recommendation is to go into the fleet before you pick your rate do not take a bonus for a rate there is a reason for this and you will be glad you listened to me I wish I had listened to this before I joined.
