So I have an Oscar... he's maybe 8" or so. I will occasionally pick him up some feeder goldfish for entertainment. Well, today I was at the local gun/outdoor shop and got the idea to get him a few live minnows. They're a little on the big side, but not too big for him... or so I think. I get home and put them in the tank, expecting the usual carnage to unfold and.... NOTHING! Now i've got a freaking fish tank full of minnows! UNLEASH THE FURY! |
| I think eventually he'll eat them once he's hungry enough. Brings back memories, I've had Oscars, Lukananis (peacock bass), snakeheads (when they were not illegal), piranahs. The ultimate eating machines were the snakeheads, I had some that ate so many goldfish at once that they died of bloat. |

When feeding a feeder fish to another fish, grab the feeder by the tail and whack its head against the edge of a counter. Drop it into the tank and the other fish will eat it.
Another way is to drop the feeder fish into a small bowl full of ice water. This'll cause it to "lock up". After a bit, drop it into the main tank. This only works if the other fish is aggressive and will hit on the feeder right away, as the warmer water will revive the feeder within a minute or so. |

I put a good sized red eared perch i caught in a fish tank once. That fish was a killer! Anything , minnows, grasshopers, whatever moved was killed with extreme prejudice! Awesome. the oscar is like that too, hence why i thought he would destroy these minnows with extreme prejudice |

Time for a piranha I was in a bar about 35 years ago where the owner had a large tank with four or five piranhas and one very large Oscar. The Oscar had all five cowed in the corner of the tank. They were afraid to come out. The bartender stated that there had been 7 piranhas at one time but that two had mysteriously disappeared. They didn't even come out when he would dump gold fish in the tank. |

He'll go after the minnows when he gets hungry.
I had an oscer and a plecostomus (prehistoric looking sucker fish) in a tank together for a long time. I figured the oscer wouldn't bother the plecostomus, as he was almost the same length. Well, one day the oscer must have decided he could take the plecostomus and attempted to eat him. The oscer swam around for almost a week with the back half of the plecostomus sticking out of his mouth! |

I think the oscar ate him, digested him, and then barfed out the bones, because the skull was completely intact, complete with fin spines. |

I bought them all as juvies, and they all grew up big together. The Oscar died after about 3 years, the Plecos are still alive. I had them in a 70 gallon tank and was tired of taking care of them. When I gave them away, their heads were ~4 inches in diameter, and ~15 inches long. I have no idea how big they are now.. Ill have to ask the guy I gave them to. |
Maybe he'll eat them later. Ours once let a goldfish live for two weeks but then that was it.
