I have several old brake disks laying around.  If I were to shoot at them 100yrds with 7.62 or 5.56 would that be safe (all shooting done on farm in middle of no where).  Beyond the obvious problem that they have a hole in the middle.  I would like to make some good metal targets to shoot at but those cost $ and these are free.

Eh, dont shoot any steel core at them.

Also, keep in mind.. You have no idea where they may end up.

when you miss.. you can claim there was no sound cause it went thru the hole

We've shot some old brake rotors before.   Rifles blow chunks out of them and they aren't any good but for one shoot.

I'd would. Try it and report back.

Honesty why not?  Im being serious, not trying to start a fight.

If you shoot them with centerfire, they will shatter.  Won't be a reusable target.  GTG for rimfire, though.

Not surprising.  They're heat treated, they'll be brittle.

Hmm, good point.

Hell with it, go for it.

Keep in mind that brake rotors are hardened by their function. They will crack and break rapidly and evenmore dangerous you will get ricochets which you do not know where they are going.

That rotor has another 5K miles left on it, easy.

All of those cracks will make it feel like anti-lock brakes.

Not much of a story. It was gramp's Samurai and my little bro drove it till the muffler fell off then parked it. I decided to get it going agian and drove it home. I couldn't really hear the brakes grinding because of the exhaust noise... then I took the wheel off.

I drove it like that about 8 miles across Denver.

I want to buy one or two of those 1/2" thick 500 brinell plates from Widener's. $59.50 each.

Those rotors are likely cast iron and won't last very long being shot at.

Disk brakes are normally cast iron.  Cast iron is brittle and a HP rifle will just blow chunks out of them.  If you want a good target, try and get some railroad rail.  Lay it on its side and shoot the top of the rail.  There is little chance of even Ap rounds going through.  I have put 30 Cal AP rounds from a 300 mag right through the 3/4 inch webbing of railroad rail however (like knife through butter).

At 100 yards, sure.

Have at it.

Shooting stuff is fun.

Ricochets suck if you're at the end of one.

There are many better things to shoot at.

Shoot at those rotors and you're a Darwin candidate.

Yep, I've shot at them before, and as others have said...they're brittle and really don't last very long.  I prefer to shoot at mild steel plates, ranging from .250-.500" thick depending on what I'm shooting at the time.

100 yards in fine, just make sure to hang them up so they can swing. Fixed metal objects tend to throw shit back, ask me how I know.

Have at it,  They shatter pretty quick as others have said due to how brittle they are.

I've shot them with everything from 5.56mm to 300 WinMag, no ricochets yet.  At 100yds you should be pretty good.

One thing I do when shooting steel plates or any other random metal object is to angle it forward (towards the shooting line) that way if the bullet does decide to ricochet it will do so down and into the ground.

Just my .02 cents
