I was watching "Inside the FBI" on Discovery last night, and they were getting ready to do a raid on a suspected child pornographer.
In the pre-raid meeting the briefing officer (or narrator, I don't remember)  said "we did a weapons check, and the owner is a gun owner. There is a 9mm registered to him".

How do they do a "weapons check"?  Is this a California thing?

Scary.

Depends on the state or local laws.

CCW permits could also be checked.

I believe it was in/around San Diego. The rest of the show was based on the San Diego office so I assume the child porn raid was as well.

Or, the feds maintain a secret registry.

Nah, nothing like that would EVER happen. The Feds ALWAYS obey the law.

Sometimes, the simpliest and most logial answers are the correct answers..........

In NY (i know it sucks)  they have you fingerprinted and background checked for pistol permits through the FBI

It is also checked by State Police and county, but from my understanding most LE in the country use and or share information with the FBI's national database.

You are right, there is a shared database, but it has nothing to do with a federal gun ownership or purchase log.

NFA also takes a phone call.... no super secret database there either.

It may not be called or even claim to have "federal gun ownership info" but you can damn sure bet they are recording that information.  If they didn't they would be a pretty piss poor agency.  Like giving out a speeding ticket and not recording the make/mod of the car...some things are just SOP....

If they are looking at a persons record in order to "ok them" for a permit, would be strange to say the least if they did not record that.  And if they record the yes or no on the fact that you were issued a permit, then they know you are armed...may not be legal, may not be advertised, but the fact that the information is out there and shared almost guarantees that it is being recorded.

This, modern tech. makes it WAY too easy.

Another question about that show.  In it they did and "illegal" gun purchase where they sent their informant to purchase a rifle from one of their targets.  I was expecting some type of "assault rifle" but when they showed it it appeared to be a K98 or some other Mauser derivative.  So my question is are all face to face sales illegal in California?

Uhhh.. You kind of answered your own point as your permit is the record anyways. Is there a record of every records check? Yes...... this includes every single one completed by every cop that uses any system.

There is no separate database that stores information for every request for an inquiry related to a firearms purchase. Getting a firearm traced isn't as easy as it should be, given the great tin foil hat theory and modern technology.

Yes, all transfers have to be DROS'd except inter-family transfer of rifles/shotguns.

In WA state all new pistol sales are registered with the State Patrol.

Child pornagraphers are required to fill out a form ICP-420.  In KA, all child pornagraphers must register their firearms, so that when the feds get around to raiding them, they will know what kind of firearms thay have.
