To make a long story short my truck was broken into last night. The passenger window was smashed out and luckily my I Pod was the only thing stolen. Set aside from the fact that I became complacent and left a valuable in my vehicle overnight, I have decided that a security camera system on the front of the house would possibly deter this from happening again. Note I say possibly. If it doesn't work to deter then it could possibly gather vital information that would be useful for the police or myself. I'm shopping around to try to find a pretty decent system but have no idea where to start. What has or hasn't worked for you guys? Any help on this matter would be appriciated. Oh and by the way the cum guzzlers were caught and arrested trying to break into another vehicle and my I Pod is waiting for me at the police department property room. Again I appriciate any advice you guys might have to give.

Having been in private and industrial security I can tell you there are advantages and disadvantages to a security camera.

Advantage: Will probably deter SOME intruders but not the hardcore or hyped up ones.

Disadvantage: Cost. A good setup will probably run form 7-800 dollars PLUS the labor to install it.
Don't think the camera is going to be the most expensive item. The computer setup
just to record the images will cost a bunch too.
If you are serious only one camera won't do. If the location of the single camera
is noted during the day it will be the first thing taken out after dark.

You will have to consider everything before you plunk down your hard earned money on a department store "Security System"

Ask your insurance agent if he can recommend a security consultant. I'm not talking some armchair commando either.
A good one will spend time showing you what you will need.

Hope this helps,

Unless you're willing to also install a time-lapse recorder or have a PC equipped with an image capture card running all the time, you might consider putting up a game camera instead. They're cheap, self-contained, and will automatically record any movement around your vehicle. Some models use an IR flash (invisible to the naked eye), so the thieves won't be tipped off the camera's presence as soon as the flash fires.

Thanks for the help guys. The game camera idea sounds like something I might pursue.
