I used to be a skeptic. No more.

Who in the hell is going to hire an unemployed drafter with a college degree to drive a fork lift or work on an assembly line?

2 months and I can't pay someone to hire me.

Try and get a job changing tires and oil and breaks? I have to list my last 4 jobs on the app.

How in the hell am I supposed to find employment?

Just try and get a full time job with the UPS. It isn't going to happen. I'm a white male that has never been in the Milatary.

Why do they tend not to hire people with college education? Are they looking for long term workers, and fear that someone with a degree will bolt as soon as a job in their particular field they studied in opens?

A couple of things you can do.

If you have a lot of experience, remove anything older than 10 years. Also, don't put your graduation year on your resume.

If you're looking for a job in which you are over qualified, remove the degree from your resume and/or play down your experience.

Companies generally don't like to hire over qualified people because they often bolt quickly when something better comes up. They may also fear that the other employees will be intimidated by you and/or you might want things done your way, whether it is the right way or not.

Hiring managers have a picture in their mind of the perfect candidate, and if you don't fit that picture, you're not in a good position.

So, modify your resume to fit the job.

Then what have I've been doing for the last 15 years? Sitting in jail?

If I don't put down prior job experience at the age of 32 then what exactly have I been doing my entire life?

I've worked for a summer at a grocery store and after that a total of about 10 months in a window/door manufacturing plant. I have a high school diploma.

Will I be overqualified to apply at Safeway?

This!

The military is a good job, and 32 isn't to old to start, and if you don't want to be at the pointy end of the spear thats ok, its a steady paycheck and your serving your country.

I went down this road several months ago. They will not have me.

It's the same reason why I decide to be single. (no I'm not gay) (no, not even alittle.)

Youve been "self employed" since you were 18.  Mowing lawns, painting houses, and selling stuff on EBAY.  Your looking for a job now because the economy is bad and people arent buying your services anymore. Your welcome.

Job market sucks.  I just hope something opens up for me when I graduate this summer that is related to my degree.

It may seem like I'm an asshole crybaby but I will not involve myself in sales.

I might have taken a job, door to door, selling lawn service, with a pressure sales technique.

I will not do it. Pushing things onto people is the exact opposite of my personality.

Hah.  Yeah, I'm sort of in the same boat.  I've been looking for summer legal work, and Career Services said "only put the last ten years of work experience on your resume."  Well, ok, they require that we get their approval on all resumes we send out.  So I did that, and in the only interview I've gotten, the guy asked me if I was in prison after graduating from college, and then had me fill him in on the previous several years from memory.

Right now, I think I'll be relaxing on a beach all summer, 'cause I'm damn sure not going to find any legal work, and I'd rather study, trade the stock market, and do some writing than stock shelves or mow lawns.  Not that anyone would hire me to stock shelves or mow lawns anyway, because I'm overqualified.  It's not like I need the spare change anyway.  I just need the legal experience and connections.

As far as what you've been doing, if you really want "anything" for a job, lie.  Almost nobody checks references anyway.  For the very few that do, find a friend who works at someplace like NAPA or Wal-Mart and have him tell callers that you were the best floor-mopper his store ever had.

That's exactly the reason. They figure as soon as the economy gets better, then you'll quit to go back to your chosen career field, thus they really don't want to waste time hiring someone who won't be long term, unless it's absolutely necessary.

Look up your local cable company, they are likely hiring. I am as over qualified as you (probably more so, I had about 12 years in the field at much higher level positions than they hired me on at). They are also happy to hire people who are a little older, and provide decent benefits.

Do not go into contracting for the cable company, that is an entirely different ball of wax, and I would not recommend it.
