How many pull ups can you do?

UPDATE: MUST BE DEAD HANG
3/3/2009 5:28:58 PM EDT
[#1]
Only 87.
3/3/2009 5:29:18 PM EDT
[#2]
used to be able to do around 20.  Now, maybe 15.
3/3/2009 5:30:13 PM EDT
[#3]
When I was in better shape, I could probably get between 15-20. Now I'd be lucky to get 15.
3/3/2009 5:30:37 PM EDT
[#4]
Just got back from outside - 10. Couldn't pull off that number 11.

btw this is every one over hand from a dead hang. No cheating!
3/3/2009 5:30:56 PM EDT
[#5]
16 right now.  Trying to get in shape so I can be a viable officer candidate
3/3/2009 5:31:45 PM EDT
[#6]
just one... two if im lucky
3/3/2009 5:31:46 PM EDT
[#7]
I can't do any
3/3/2009 5:31:55 PM EDT
[#8]
You should specify:

Dead hang pull-ups

-or-

Nasty kip-ups

3/3/2009 5:31:59 PM EDT
[#9]
8. Been working on it for a few weeks. When I started, 3 would kick my ass.
3/3/2009 5:32:04 PM EDT
[#10]
52. Is my max ever. -dead hang.

Last time I went through a qual I got 40 though.

I am not lying, that is my true max pull up number, I am a pulling up mutant.
3/3/2009 5:32:34 PM EDT
[#11]
I can do like 17-20 with palms facing inward and like 10-15 with palms facing outward.
3/3/2009 5:34:39 PM EDT
[#12]
Personal best was 12, now about 6 - 7 on a good day.

3/3/2009 5:36:52 PM EDT
[#13]
I might could muster one or two if you held me at gunpoint.

I can do about 7 or maybe 8  if I really push myself.  I am fairly large guy, so they aren't easy even if I work at them.
3/3/2009 5:47:08 PM EDT
[#16]
I can "pull up" beers, all night!
3/3/2009 5:53:55 PM EDT
[#17]
If I half-ass it, I can cheat my way to 8.

Dead hang..........5 tops.
3/3/2009 6:02:24 PM EDT
[#18]
I'm fat and lazy so I can only do about 3.

Holy shit.  You are a machine!!   I am filled with a mixture of envy, admiration and hate!!

Even when I was a fit little infantryman in my late teens, I could only do about 8.  I have always sucked at pull-ups.  I was a decent runner, and good at other upper body strength, but pull-ups just kicked my ass.

Nowadays, while I can bench/squat/deadlift more than I could when I was in the army, the number of pull-ups have gone down, so now I am even more pathetic.
3/3/2009 6:04:12 PM EDT
[#20]
18!

Did em just now
3/3/2009 6:07:09 PM EDT
[#21]
Those of you who can do so many: how did you work up to this?

I can never do more than 12.  I work out and have gotten stronger but I haven't increased the number in 2+ years.

[#22]
I'm afraid Torq will call me an armchair commando again if I answer. After all, he felt the need to call BS when ~half the respondents in a thread claimed they could actually -gasp- pass the APFT.

Personal best is 12. But I haven't done that in a while. Usually 7-8 and I'll do multiple sets.

You can forget about nasty kip-ups at OCS. Nothing in your future but the real thing.

For an old guy I can still do a few.

I have a free standing pull up station in my basement . After I jog I go down stairs and do a few sets.
3/3/2009 6:13:42 PM EDT
[#27]
did 34 in a row today, dead hang.  That is my best to date.
3/3/2009 6:15:51 PM EDT
[#28]
used to do 20-30, atm it's 10-15....been slackin.
3/3/2009 6:16:01 PM EDT
[#29]
Right on!  Must be dead hang to count.  I can do 11.
3/3/2009 6:17:16 PM EDT
[#30]
I can do 20 one armed pull ups.
3/3/2009 6:19:21 PM EDT
[#31]
Palms out dead hang 14
3/3/2009 6:19:32 PM EDT
[#32]
I just started doing oullups about a week ago. I can do 7 so far. And 25 pushups.

3/3/2009 6:22:26 PM EDT
[#33]
This is the truth, I never knew them to be so hard.  I've never compared numbers of reps with anyone.
I use my power tower at the end of my workout, which goes situps full decline on bench-80, 20 pushups on tower, 10-100#curls, 20-30# triceps curls, 60 reps each side 30# each hand dumbell side bends, 10 dips, 20 leg raises, both on tower, 10 185# benches, then finish off with the pull-chin on the tower.
I'm up to 22-25 wide grip pull-ups, followed by same amount of narrow pull-ups and chin-ups, 68 total my highest so far, looking to break 70 soon.  I've been hanging way down each rep.  I'm 5'10", 156lbs., 41 y.o. 30" waist, 42" chest.  I guess I'm doing pretty well, do this 5 days weekly after work.
I eat well, but I do smoke.

ETA:  Takes about a total of 45 min. to an hour depending on how tired I am.  Couple of minutes between sets, sometimes jumping right back in, sometimes walking around for a few.
3/3/2009 6:27:37 PM EDT
[#34]
I train legs and lower back one night. Bi's and tri's the next night. And chest upper back the third night. Part of upper back routine is pull ups. I'm up to 3 x12. I used to be able to do them 20 reps, but I got fat and lazy for a couple decades.
3/3/2009 6:31:18 PM EDT
[#35]
At once?
3/3/2009 6:32:33 PM EDT
[#36]
My arms would rip out of their sockets if I tried.
3/3/2009 6:35:58 PM EDT
[#37]
211

If you add all of ARFCOM together.

switch your days around to bi/tri as the third day and chest/back the 2nd day...bet you do more pullups without your arms being slightly fatigued

skip the lat pulldowns and assisted pull ups and focus on regular pull ups, you will get there much faster.  Once you can do 10-12 start doing weighted pullups.

edit:  I am 5'10 and 210 lbs

It takes a lot of time.  Thats pretty good for having only been working at it for 2 months if you were completely out of shape before.  Keep at it

I can do 8 or 9 with a 30 pound weight attached.  I weigh 180.

This will help? After about 3 sets of pull ups im toast
You think that will be enough total reps to gain needed strength?
3/3/2009 6:50:10 PM EDT
[#44]
Not enough

5' 6" and 175. Yes, I know.. Im a "little person".

I can do 15-20.
3/3/2009 6:50:40 PM EDT
[#46]
I can do 15 to 18 dead hang, somewhere just over 20 kipping. I do a crapload of Crossfit but I'm not on the same planet as a lot of Crossfitters. Some of those guys can do 50 deadhangs without blinking.
3/3/2009 6:50:55 PM EDT
[#47]
Best is 18. I usually try to knock out 2 sets of 10 with a min. or two of rest though. Working up to 20 at a time.

ETA: 5' 11" 170lb.
3/3/2009 6:54:48 PM EDT
[#48]
Also, once I was able to do about 12 or so, I started doing wide bent-grip pullups.  Those really help your forearms

If you want to feel really bad, try to do some muscle ups, I can only do about 7 of those.

Like 6. I'm strong.
