How many pull ups can you do?
UPDATE: MUST BE DEAD HANG |

52. Is my max ever. -dead hang. Last time I went through a qual I got 40 though. I am not lying, that is my true max pull up number, I am a pulling up mutant. Even when I was a fit little infantryman in my late teens, I could only do about 8. I have always sucked at pull-ups. I was a decent runner, and good at other upper body strength, but pull-ups just kicked my ass. Nowadays, while I can bench/squat/deadlift more than I could when I was in the army, the number of pull-ups have gone down, so now I am even more pathetic.

I'm afraid Torq will call me an armchair commando again if I answer. After all, he felt the need to call BS when ~half the respondents in a thread claimed they could actually -gasp- pass the APFT.

This is the truth, I never knew them to be so hard. I've never compared numbers of reps with anyone.
I use my power tower at the end of my workout, which goes situps full decline on bench-80, 20 pushups on tower, 10-100#curls, 20-30# triceps curls, 60 reps each side 30# each hand dumbell side bends, 10 dips, 20 leg raises, both on tower, 10 185# benches, then finish off with the pull-chin on the tower. I'm up to 22-25 wide grip pull-ups, followed by same amount of narrow pull-ups and chin-ups, 68 total my highest so far, looking to break 70 soon. I've been hanging way down each rep. I'm 5'10", 156lbs., 41 y.o. 30" waist, 42" chest. I guess I'm doing pretty well, do this 5 days weekly after work. I eat well, but I do smoke.
ETA: Takes about a total of 45 min. to an hour depending on how tired I am. Couple of minutes between sets, sometimes jumping right back in, sometimes walking around for a few. |

Quoted: I train legs and lower back one night. Bi's and tri's the next night. And chest upper back the third night. Part of upper back routine is pull ups. I'm up to 3 x12. I used to be able to do them 20 reps, but I got fat and lazy for a couple decades. ![]() switch your days around to bi/tri as the third day and chest/back the 2nd day...bet you do more pullups without your arms being slightly fatigued |

Quoted: I dont see how you guys can do so many. Ive been going to the gym for 2 months dooing lat pull downs, rows and assistid pull ups and my tops is 4 dead hang! What am i dooing wrong? ETA- i probably am bigger than half of the arfcommers though. 6ft2 201 lbs. skip the lat pulldowns and assisted pull ups and focus on regular pull ups, you will get there much faster. Once you can do 10-12 start doing weighted pullups. edit: I am 5'10 and 210 lbs |

Thats pretty good for having only been working at it for 2 months if you were completely out of shape before. Keep at it |

After about 3 sets of pull ups im toast You think that will be enough total reps to gain needed strength? |
