I got 64-bit on my desktop solely so I can utilize my 4 gigs of RAM...

64 bit is actually slightly slower than the 32 bit stuff for 99% of normal office duties and gaming.  And drivers are notoriously bad.

Only do 64 bit if you really need to, like if you are running rendering programs that are optimized to 64 bit and require more than 4gb ram.

The difference between 3gig and 4gig is noticeable especially on start up.

My comp will swap for quite some time with 3gig on start up. With 4gig it is rocking and rolling as soon as I enter my password. In some of the games I play (namely strategy games) I've gotten the windows + game memory usage above 3gig. It is just so nice to be able to tab in and out of games without listening to the hard drive churn away for a minute before you can do anything.

I was told we had to order from dell to get a discount. Then when I got the purchasing packet it had a flier from PCConnection with it and an employee log in. I'm just waiting right now for them to send purchasing a quote for the computer.

You're adding twice the heat to a form factor that can barely dissipate it in standard form.

Gaming laptops are fucking USELESS.

I have a desktop.  I have a desktop that can play games.

I want the laptop to be able to compete with my desktop simply because my fiancee is always on my computer when we're home. I'd prefer using it in another room if I choose to.

This laptop is more so just a computer away from my computer.  The games thing is so I can still get in on some FPS when my desktop is occupied.

That is one of the downfalls of it, but I don't plan on taking it out much where I wouldn't be able to plug it in. This is mainly for home use.

To the people hating on this, offer me up another solution from that site. Honestly, i'm not a complete retard when it comes to computers but i'm certainly no expert.

My criteria -

Good size display - it doesn't have to be 18.4 inches.

A good amount of speed and ram, this will be a general use computer but I will however be playing games on it from time to time. I'm not looking at the highest possible FPS but playing games on medium settings would be nice.

1500 or under

Windows Vista - yeah I know, I happen to like vista though.

Help me out.

I've owned a gaming laptop before.

Trust me.

Run the fuck away.

It's a complete waste of money UNLESS you're getting a 3-5 year full replacement no questions asked warranty.

Since you're not: Beat feet.

Just build another desktop in another room for half the money and a ton less headache.

A gaming laptop; for home use.

Unless space is a huge concern, this is completely assbackwards.

Go ahead if you want, but a Sony putting out that much heat with a 1 year warranty is bad news.

Find something comparable with an actual warranty, even pay a little more for a good warranty.

Gaming laptops really are another breed, you WILL be sending it in for service.

We have about 10 laptop users here at work that use Sony's. I have no complaints.  I have had to fix a few of them. Had key pop off one. Another had a squeaky fan but there really has been no major problems in the last 7-8 years we have used them. The Dells seem pretty good too.

The benefits of getting the full 4gb far outweighs the disadvantages of 64 bit.

There is nothing wrong with Vista Home Premium, especially in 64 bit.

Most of the benchmark tests I have seen show 64-bit Vista is indeed faster (but not by a whole lot) than 32-bit versions.

I'd have to see the final price to see if that's a good deal, but it looks more like a $1000 rig than an $800 rig.
The processor is pretty speedy, 512mb video memory, 7200rpm hard drive, wireless-n all will add to the price.

I'd say that's a pretty decent price.  I just noticed it has 4gb of DDR3 memory, that's a pretty significant upgrade that makes up a  good portion of the price.  Like I said, the cpu is pretty speedy, fast hard drive (well, faster than 5400 in any case), wireless-n, are all options that'll push the price up.  Not saying whether you should get it or not, but for around $1000 that's a pretty decent price from Dell.  You wouldn't be getting ripped off.

My laptop runs Windows Vista Home Premium, and my media/gaming pc runs Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  I've never had driver issues with either machine and the only issue I had was when I tried to play Max Payne on my Vista machine, the sound won't work without a lot of effort into it, but the game is something like 8 years old.
