If you are at an intersection where it's legal to turn right on red, is it okay NOT to?

My dad and I were at a stoplight yesterday in his big honkin' GMC work truck and some little Saturn was beeping their horn because we weren't turning on a red.

Were you turning on red,  just not at that moment?

No.  He was going to turn as soon as the light changed to green. He had his signal on.

I get annoyed when someone doesn't turn right on red (if they have thier signal on) and no one is comming, but I won't beep.

I don't think you legally have to.
But it is sure aggravating when you are in a hurry, and someone won't.

Isn't the point to signal before you can turn if you want to turn on a green?

Its fucking stupid not to if you can.

you're not legally required to turn, but you're a dick not to if it's safe to do so.

You can sit there as long as you damn well please.

...at least until the light is green.

It's the person's decision to turn or not to. If you don't want to, or don't feel safe turning right on red when legal to do so, than that's your decision.

If turn on red is legal, there's no reason to wait until the green.....assuming you're clear to turn.
2/12/2009 6:34:12 PM EDT

Depends on how much of a hurry I am in.

No legal fault in not turning - but if safe to do so, there is no real reason not to.

Turn already. Right on red means OK.

They were right to honk.  I would have done the same.

Sorry, that's just my opinion.  Why hold others back when it's unnecessary?

I signal before the turn regardless of what color the light is if thats what you mean.

YES, it is okay "not" to.

If you do not feel it is safe to proceed, then don't.

Let the person behind you piss themselves if they don't like it.  I hate that.

There is a freeway on-ramp near me which comes up right after a traffic light.  You have to drive 20 feet beyond the traffic light in order to begin to turn onto the ramp.

A lot of people consider that a "right on red" (going THROUGH a red light to get onto that on ramp) - but I consider it running a red light.

If I need to get on that on ramp, and that light is red, I always wait until it turns green, because I don't want to be the "test case" if a cop sees me going "right on red" there.  I have had people behind me have fits about this before, but they can pay the ticket if they like.

2/12/2009 6:35:18 PM EDT
[#16]
So you were intending to turn, just not on red.  I'm not one of those guys that gets all keyed up while driving so I wouldn't give a shit, but... I can see that if your signal was on and you had a clear chance to turn on red, some might get a little impatient.

Signaling indicates the driver's intention, whether it is to turn while the light is red, or after it turns green.  If it's red, but no one is coming, why wouldn't you turn?  It is not illegal or unsafe, and it is aggravating to those behind who also wish to turn right and potentially get through the light on the street they are turning onto before it turns red.

ETA: I've honked at people in front of me in this very situation, I had shit to do.

If it is legal in your area to turn right on a red, then that red acts as a stop sign, so unless you also wait for stop signs to turn green, then you need to proceed when it is safe to do so.

If he wanted to turn, he could have.

There was lots of cross traffic...green on the cross street, 4 lane state highway.

Welcome to Montreal!

I don't know if there is a law that you MUST,  but if you don't turn right on red after a stop, then don't be suprised if a whole lot of people behind you are wondering what country you came from.  It is aggravating when you have been driving for 35 years and suddenly some dork decides to hold up a line of people,
2/12/2009 6:38:04 PM EDT
[#21]
WTF wouldn't you turn?

I'm tired of people driving like they've got no place to be.

Drive with a purpose.

Of course he should turn if its clear, but if he's not 100 percent sure then of course not.
2/12/2009 6:38:50 PM EDT
[#23]
Remove 'etiquitte' and you'll do fine.  What i hate is a left lane person just ahead of me swooping over to the right lane (with not dedicaicated right turn lane just so he won't be sitting behind someone) and therefore blocking any right turners.

But in ARFCOM land thats okay.

If someone's in front of me and not turning on red when they are allowed to, I'll lightly tap the horn to let them know (in case they didn't realize, or fell asleep at the switch) - but if they don't WANT to turn, that's fine with me.

Honking is a fine method for discovering the length of time the light remains red.

Don't be honking if you can't see the cross traffic or whether there's a "No Right Turn on Red" sign across the street.

Assuming its safe I always turn unless its one of those Nazi Police State red light cameras. People say they have gotten tickets for turning right on red before. I don't trust police state cameras run by foreign company so I won't turn right at those fuckers. I try to avoid them but the Liberal Dems and NeoCon's love their fucking cameras.

Clarification is key.  Turning right on red with traffic coming is clearly ridiculous.

True dat.. And if your Dad sat there for 2 minutes and had a decent opportunity to turn and didn't take it then the honks are well deserved.  If there was no opportunity, then no harm-no foul.

Don't get all defensive now.

If it's clear in the driver's judgment to turn right on red, and it is legal to do so, treat it like a stop sign.  It ain't Sunday, some people have work to do, MCDonalds to go to, etc.  Be safe, but don't drive like you're the only person on the road.

There are plenty of times I've been honked at for refusing to turn, but if it's clear––-just go.

Nothing complicated about this.  Either traffic was clear enough for you to safely go or it was not.  If it is safe to proceed and you are not turning right, then it is as silly as not proceeding on a green and you can expect to get honked at and deserve to be.  If traffic was not clear, you may still get honked at, but you are in no way obligated to drive in an unsafe manor and the silly thing to do would be to proceed.

Christmas Eve 1997 I held a man at gun point after he tried to come through my window for not turning on a red.  I couldn't see to turn but he didn't care.

So much for Peace on Earth.
