I have my replacement stickers for my license plates, but there are several old layers of stickers.   I can try to peel/scrape them off, but is there an easier way (soak in rubbing alcohol, acetone, etc.) that will do a neater job....doesn't matter if it dissolves the old stickers, just so it doesn't effect the license itself.

Thanks!!

You can use that 3M adhesive remover...

Or, a razor, like you'd use to get a sticker off of a flat pane of glass. I'll be in the same position soon, and I'm probably going to go for the razor.

Might help to hit it with a heat gun/hair dryer, get it nice and hot, before you try and peel it off...

Well, around here the illegals steal them, so we have to be very careful about making sure they stay on and CANNOT be peeled off. Meaning that it has to be applied directly to clear bare license plate.

That being said, I unscrew my license plates, take then into the house and heat them up from behind –– from the side with out paint over an open flame. The heat makes my stickers very easy to peel off with a small knife. Then I clean off the residue and apply new sticker. Its VERY hard to take off now.

That was why I figured on removing the old stickers.   Don't want to get pulled to find out my sticker is stolen...

After properly applied take a razor and score the sticker diagonally with an "X" a couple times. It makes it impossible to steal and re-use.

As for getting them off, a razor and windex work for me.

Naptha lighter fluid is excellent solvent for the adhesive.
